Two important events in U.S. politics happen on Tuesday, April 4. One of them you can do something about. It’s not Donald Trump being arraigned on criminal charges in Manhattan—it’s the Supreme Court election in Wisconsin.
Control of the state’s Supreme Court is on the line in the election between Judge Janet Protasiewicz and far-right candidate Dan Kelly. Republicans are pulling out all the stops, sending out an “emergency alert” text message opposing Protasiewicz on Friday while parts of the state were under a tornado watch. The message contained a video mimicking official emergency alerts so closely that it “would likely violate federal law if broadcasted on television,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Instead of promoting public safety, though, the video said, “This is a State of Wisconsin voter alert. Attention citizens: our Second Amendment rights are under attack by Judge Janet Protasiewicz.”
What Republicans are much less eager to talk about in this election is something the Wisconsin Supreme Court will be hearing a lawsuit about: the state’s 174-year-old abortion ban, which went into effect after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Kelly has the endorsement of multiple anti-abortion groups, while Protasiewicz has made clear that she supports abortion rights.
Abortion rights, the end of GOP gerrymandering and the future of democracy may be decided tomorrow with this election in Wisconsin. Just an hour of reaching Wisconsin voters can boost Democratic turnout.
