Biden is going to drop out. It'll be two weeks at the most and probably within days.
Not only is it going to happen, but the New York Times made it happen, first by editorializing their opinion that he should drop out, then creating momentum with their "key ally" story. The newspaper didn't just report the news, they made it.
My guess is that President Biden had no intention of dropping out when the New York Times story about a "Key Ally" came out claiming he discussed it. I suspect that was a lie. By leaking the made-up story to the Times, Biden's entire support network was upended as everybody started speculating and posturing for a potential Biden-free election. He's been weakened so much now that he'll have to drop out. A Trump victory is an existential threat, and enough Democrats have now come out against Biden that I think we've reached the tipping point on pressure. The "key ally" knew what they were doing, and I suspect that the Times did also.
It's a shame too, because Biden has been a great president. His only major flaw has been difficulty in public messaging - the public doesn't know his successes and believes Trump's lies. I believe he'd be a great president again too.
We're in uncharted territory now. Whoever wins the nomination has to look to the American public like they earned it instead of being given a spot on the ballot in a backroom deal. James Zogby (who has been pushing an anti-Biden agenda) pitched a plan for an open convention. I suspect the Democratic leadership will adopt something similar to his approach, further pressuring President Biden to drop out sooner rather than later:

I hate the backstabs and the shenanigans that are likely coming, but ultimately, what most matters is that Trump is never again president and ideally beaten in a repudiating landslide. My personal preference is a crushing victory by Biden, and if not him, then Pete. However, I'll fully support the Democrat nominee for president in 2024, whoever that may be.
The New York Times adjusted their "key ally" story after President Biden denied it, but the Daily Kos article is here:

MAGA suggests that America used to be great in the past but is no longer great. America is great now! Anyone who suggest it isn't is nuts. The life needs to be crushed from MAGA by a disastrous 2024 defeat and then another defeat in the 2026 midterms, and yet another disaster in the following 2028 election. Only then can the Republican party be remade into a patriotic organization again rather than a jingoistic one. MRGA (Make Republicans Great Again) doesn't have the same ring to it, but the path to a loyal opposition within a decade that puts country before party requires Trump to lose bigly.
So, thanks New York Times - you torpedoed President Biden repeatedly, making this a horserace when it should have been a blowout and then cutting Joe off at the knees. It's our job now as patriotic Americans to ensure this country survives as a democracy.
