In 1989, five teenagers who were 14-16 years old were framed by the NYPD for a horrific rape and assault. Donald Trump took out full page ads suggesting they be immediately executed.
The Central Park 5 were exonerated decades later, and NYC paid tens of millions in restitution.
Republicans never thought twice about supporting the man who led a lynch mob against five black/brown teenagers falsely framed for a sexual assault.
Of course, it’s 2018 and Trump has nominated someone credibly accused of sexual assault to the highest court in the land. So all of a sudden, Republican partisans have discovered a capacity for forgiveness.
But we shouldn’t call it forgiveness, it’s really impunity they’re advocating for. Kavanaugh has neither confessed, nor has he exhibited contrition, in the face of a well documented and credible accusation.
He is following the Trump playbook, publicized by Donald Trump and followed to a T by Roy Moore. And of course, this should not be surprising.
It’s also worth noting that there are likely to be other credible accusations against Kavanaugh. Just as there are against Trump and Roy Moore.
The other person who was in the room where the alleged assault took place is a man who wrote a book about getting blind drunk as a teenager. Oh, and there’s also this little fact about Mark Judge.
As the case against Kavanaugh has gotten stronger, Republicans in Congress and in the administration have continued to stand by him. But ordinary people from his life are backing away from their prior statements of support.
So what does all this say about the conservative columnists and politicians making excuses for the alleged assault?
