Open a newspaper (if you are old school), or go to your favorite news and information website and what do you see? Nothing but things the current administration is doing that outrages you—locking children in cages, not doing anything about gun violence, doing nothing over the high costs of health care, doing nothing to help college students pay for college, doing nothing for those buried in student loan debt. Hatred, racism, and division spewing out of the Oval Office like an exploding volcano.
If it is not contempt for the American people belching out of the White House, then it is absolute stupidity, like buying Greenland:
Greenland is not for sale and the idea of selling it to the United States is absurd, Denmark’s prime minister [Mette Frederiksen] said on Sunday after an economic adviser to President Donald Trump confirmed the U.S. interest in buying the world’s largest island.
“Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously,”
Then the president of the United States starts whining about being treated poorly by Denmark when they tell him no.
Of course his tweets, were not enough.
President Trump on Wednesday attacked Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, saying she had made “nasty” comments about his interest in having the United States purchase Greenland.
Of course, he would attack a woman as saying “nasty” comments. But his plan to purchase Greenland is absurd. If this were anyone else but Trump, this would bring him down, but yet scandal after scandal, and he is still there.
He claims to be the chosen one:
He is not the chosen one, he is a horrible human being, he is worse than a plague of locusts. His hateful rhetoric, and policies not only hurt refugees trying to escape to a better life in the United States, he is hurting our friends and neighbors. We have immigrants in all of our communities, they live next to us, work with us, and work for us. Some are here legally, some are in the shadows. But they all want the same thing that our ancestors who immigrated here wanted, a better life.
There are uncountable stories of families being ripped apart. Children left without parents, all the victims of a cruel and heartless immigration policy that is wholly based on racism, and white extremist beliefs.
In my own hometown these policies are impacting a beloved business:
Michael’s Frozen Custard in Madison is closing this fall, and the other two locations are also in jeopardy of closing, after the owner’s spouse was denied a U.S. visa.
The shop on Monroe Street will close in September, according to Jessica Slind, an immigration attorney representing Michael Dix and his husband, Sergio De La Hernandez.
The pair were married on New Year’s Eve in 2015.
After their marriage, Michael sponsored Hernandez for a U.S. visa so that Hernandez could acquire legal status. In Aug. 2018, Hernandez was denied a visa that would allow him to gain legal status in the United States and continue to live with Dix at their home outside of Madison. Hernandez is an undocumented Madison resident who has lived in Wisconsin the past 30 years, Slind said.
How much longer are we going to put up with families and our communities being torn apart. How much longer can we tolerate this Us vs. Them mentality that has pervaded American politics of late?
While I have disagreed with former presidents on policy, and the execution of those policies, I have never felt that they were truly bad people. That has changed with Donald Trump. Trump, his family, and the sycophants in his administration are truly evil people. He is using the office of president to enrich himself and his family. He does not care about the people of this nation. The people of Greenland should consider themselves lucky—they are not for sale, but our nation is clearly for sale to the highest bidder. Sadly, our congressional leaders are afraid of this man, and refuse to impeach, worse are those in his own party who would let him rip apart the fabric of this country to push forward an agenda that a majority of Americans disagree with. We can only hope that this is the Republican Party’s last, dying gasp. I just hope it happens before the outrage devours all of us.
