I know. I know. It is not really a shocker that Trump has no real lawyer around him now, and furthermore, Trump has no legal strategy for the upcoming Senate impeachment trial.
Ex-President Donald Trump is not prepared for his Senate impeachment trial despite the fact that it could begin as early as next week.
Trump, who is charged with inciting the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol by a mob of his supporters, still has not assembled a group of lawyers to defend him at what will be his second impeachment trial, NBC News reported.
He also has no clear legal strategy for the trial, according to NBC. Democratic senators, and likely a number of Republican ones, hope to convict Trump and then vote to bar him from becoming president ever again.
The failure to prepare for the trial is consistent with Trump’s behavior this month, where he did little actual work related to the presidency.
Translation: he’s too fuckin’ lazy and arrogant to bother with finding a lawyer.
And who wants to work for him NOW? He just openly stiffed another so called lawyer, Rudy Guliani, for the “legal work” he did with sedition and insurrection. Trump has this habit of shafting his lawyers, so real lawyers will not want to work for PRIVATE CITIZEN Trump. When he was president, sure. You could always put that on a resume that you worked for the president. Oh! Wait! That was before he tried his hand at sediction and insurrection!
My guess is that Trump, besides being lazy and arrogant, thinks if he doesn’t get a lawyer he can gum up the works with the Senate trial. Some of the Republican parasites that collaborated with Trump will take up the argument that Trump needs a vigorous defense against this Democratic vendetta being waged against our former president. With no defense attorney, how can we possibly have a trial Oh Heavens!
I don’t know. Aren’t there several lawyers among the Senate Republicans? Maybe they could do it for free? Hey! There is Lindsey Graham! He’s a lawyer! Problem solved!
Oh wait. He’s going to be a so called “juror” in this Senate trial. A juror who has already made his mind. Can’t be both defense attorney for Trump and impartial made up my mind already juror. My bad!
But there is conflicting news about when Speaker Pelosi will send over the article of impeachment to the U.S. Senate. One report said it could be tomorrow with the trial maybe starting next week:
Senate Democratic leaders as of Thursday morning said that they did not know when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., will send them the article of impeachment passed last week by the House. Ten GOP House members joined all Democratic members in approving the impeachment.
With the impeachment article still in Pelosi’s hands, the Senate trial will not begin until Monday at the earliest.
But who knows at this point. I understand that Democrats really don’t want to get bogged down with a trial and trying to get a Democratic agenda passed. They do want to have a trial though, but I love some of common sense they are throwing out for not dragging Trump’s trial out.
Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., told an NBC reporter on Thursday that it is also not clear whether the trial will be “a full-blown trial with evidence and witnesses,” or a quicker trial without either of those.
Durbin noted that calling witnesses may not be necessary because “in addition to being jurists we are eyewitnesses to this crime.”
“You know, it isn’t like, oh, did somebody come into the Capitol,” Durbin said. “We know the Capitol policeman was killed, and we saw the damage that was done.”
“In that respect, it isn’t like what in the hell was going on in that telephone conversation with the Ukrainian president?” said Durbin, referring to Trump’s first Senate trial.
If you are a Senator and do not know that Trump sicked a mob on you to kill some of you all, you are too stupid to breath. Or too damn cowardly. Or both.
This really doesn’t have to take all that long. Trump’s best legal strategy is that he is out of office. It’s a bad legal argument, but it really is all that he has. And it is the one that his defenders in the Senate are pitching.
Now, if he can only get Graham to be his lawyer and be a juror….
