As I delve deeper into my campaign for the Florida House of Representatives, District 54, I am more determined than ever to ensure that Randy Maggard does not get re-elected. My recent research, as part of my Victory Fund Endorsement preparation, revealed that Maggard was a co-sponsor of both the "Don't Say Gay" bill and the "Stop WOKE Act." These bills are not just misguided—they are an affront to the values of equality and inclusion that we hold dear. And they are now law, making their repeal even more crucial.
The "Don't Say Gay" Bill
The "Don't Say Gay" bill, officially known as the Parental Rights in Education bill, aims to prohibit discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity in Florida's primary schools. This legislation is harmful on multiple levels:
- Stifling Education: By banning such discussions, we deny students the opportunity to learn about and understand the diversity of human experiences. This ignorance breeds intolerance and perpetuates stereotypes.
- Marginalizing LGBTQ+ Youth: This bill effectively silences LGBTQ+ students, making them feel invisible and invalidated. It sends a message that their identities are something to be ashamed of or hidden.
- Undermining Teachers: Educators are put in a difficult position where they have to navigate these restrictions, potentially facing penalties for simply acknowledging the existence of LGBTQ+ people.
The "Stop WOKE Act"
The "Stop WOKE Act" is another piece of legislation co-sponsored by Maggard that aims to restrict discussions about systemic racism and implicit bias in educational and workplace settings. This act is equally dangerous:
- Censoring Critical Conversations: By limiting discussions on these important topics, we ignore the realities of racial injustice and inequality. This hampers efforts to create a more inclusive and fair society.
- Hindering Progress: Addressing issues of racism and bias is essential for progress. This act prevents us from learning from our past and making necessary changes to improve the future.
- Creating a Climate of Fear: Just like the "Don't Say Gay" bill, the "Stop WOKE Act" creates an environment where educators and employers are afraid to address critical social issues, stifling open dialogue and understanding.
Other Unpopular Bills
This year, Maggard has also co-sponsored several other harmful bills, including:
- HB 49: This bill removed certain protections for minors in the workforce, making it easier for employers to exploit young workers (FL Senate).
- CS/HB 21: This bill limited compensation for victims of historical injustices at state-run schools, such as the Dozier School for Boys (MyFLHouse) (MyFLHouse).
Why I'm Fired Up
These bills are not just policy disagreements—they represent a fundamental clash of values. As someone who believes in the power of education, inclusion, and equality, I cannot stand by while such harmful legislation is enacted.
I am running for office to be a voice for those who have been silenced and to fight for policies that reflect our shared values of fairness and justice. But I can't do it alone. This campaign needs the support of every person who believes in a better, more inclusive Florida. Together, we can send a clear message that discrimination and censorship have no place in our state.
