This might be one of the bleakest comics I’ve ever made, so prepare yourself.
This comic was inspired by the various decisions that the right-wing majority of justices in The Supreme Court of the United States made over the last week and a half. They essentially made a decision that opened the door to ending all governmental oversight on pollution, food and product safety, as well as health and banking regulations. Furthermore, they ruled that paying off politicians was perfectly acceptable. But worst of all, they turned the US constitution and the rule of law on its head by saying Presidents can effectively be kings, or dictators, free from any responsibility for whatever heinous actions they do while in office.
Therefore we may be facing the last true 4th of July celebration of the Freedoms for which it stands.
Our country, which was founded to escape from under the thumb of a tyrannical mad king, his royalists, and a crooked corporation known as the East India Tea Company, has been turned upside down. Unless we use the power of our vote this year and vastly outnumber Republican votes, we face being ruled under another mad king, his royalists/blind loyalists, and a vast array of shills for multinational corporations that will make the East India Tea Company’s corruption pale in comparison.
Hard as it may sound, I’m kind of glad my Father passed away in 2011, long before he could see this madness unfold. He would have been outraged at it all. Not only because he hated self-serving assholes like Donald Trump and his minions, but also because he was a vet who served in the Army AND Air Force and was proud that he lived in a country which evolved over time to seek equity and freedom for all.
My dad served in the Army in 1950 and was stationed in Germany, where he got to see the aftermath of a nation destroyed by fascism, hatred, and arrogance. If he were alive today to see our country filled with a similar arrogance, divisive hatred, and impending fascism from Christian Nationalism, I’m pretty sure his blood would be boiling from his rage against it all.
Being that I’m the apple that hasn’t fallen far from the tree, I definitely share in that outrage. This is why I use my art as a way to positively channel my overwhelming antipathy and insolence toward the craven idiocy of our times.
Let us hope we can all positively channel our outrage at this year by going to the voting booth and voting against a Republican power grab.
With any luck maybe this won’t be the last true 4th of July celebration.
Let’s end on a happier note:
