Dear President Biden —
I am writing as a friend, campaigner, and donor, having followed you enthusiastically throughout your career. My late husband and I were silly in the happy moment when Obama chose you as a running mate. It’s one of my favorite memories.
I felt intense relief as soon as you were inaugurated. Under your leadership, we have recovered from the worst of Covid. You fight for our voting, reproductive, health care, and environmental rights. Your economic reforms aim to grow the middle class and strengthen organized labor. i disagree with your support of Israel in Gaza. Your legislation will improve infrastructure and strengthen human services for decades to come. Your Supreme Court appointee is phenomenal!
I’m hoping is that you take care of yourself, informed by my own experiences at age 73. I need much more sleep than I used to need. I am having to take on fewer responsibilities than previously. But I am happy. I wish the same for your old age.
I cannot “unsee” the serious deterioration I witnessed on debate night. I am grieving.
I hope you consult the best medical experts. You have sacrificed four years of your life to rescuing us, but now you need the load lifted so deterioration can be slowed.
You bravely face four more years of the most intense stress on this Earth. I’d prefer to see you frolicking with Jill and your grandchildren! You have done what no one else could do — restore our hope for the future. You can rest on that accomplishment and cheer on those who take up the burden. You made this possible.
I am confident that you and Democratic leaders can smooth the transition, whether to Vice President Harris and/or a candidate chosen at an open convention. We are united to defeat Trump and preserve our democracy.
Democrats can handle the election. We will take our tone from you — one of unity and hope.
We will honor your singular legacy and carry forth your mission. It seems a daunting and risky task, yet it must be done.
Fondly,
Diane G. Weaver
