My husband recently received an "official" GOP Platform Survey and cover letter in the mail. It's really "official" with a registration number in RED and everything. I'm surprised he received it, as we are registered Democrats. However, he is a white male, aged 60 years. Maybe that makes him qualified.

Nothing should surprise me anymore, but this letter and survey is disturbing. It is from the GOP chairman, Reince Priebus, and asks for a reply to the survey as well as a donation to the GOP to "block the Democrats all-out drive to take control of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2014".

What surprised me was several statements and the tone of the letter by Priebus. He seems to truly believe that most people like himself - white, male, over 40 - want to stop the "liberal" agenda of Obama and the Dems. Priebus also wants to make sure that there is a plan to "effectively communicate our conservative principles". He also states, with underlining, that he wants "to rally the tens of millions of voters like you who DID NOT vote for more of President Obama's reckless government spending, higher taxes, and liberal redistributionist policies".

Is redistributionist even a real word? Please read below the curlicue for more. My apologies to older white men everywhere.

So, so, so very sad. The news out of Connecticut is especially ironic because our legislators and Governor Snyder are passing stupid laws. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines stupid as "given to unintelligent decisions or acts; acting in an unintelligent or careless manner; lacking common sense". The present decisions made by the majority party in Michigan right now are therefore stupid.

The foremost stupid law passed THIS WEEK is Michigan House Bill and Senate Bill 59 which allows concealed weapons in so called "gun-free" zones: schools, day care centers, sports arenas, bars, places of worship, hospitals, dorms and casinos.

I was amazed when I read in the Grand Rapids Press (Michigan) when Richard Lacks, CEO and president of Lacks Enterprises, sent a strongly worded memo to his 2,300 employees that they should vote for Romney. Lacks didn't specifically say his employees HAD to vote for the Republican candidate, but the meaning of his memo was very clear. Please read below the fold for more info.

Let's Just Get Rid of Public Education

by 50sbaby

Wow, public education stinks. Teachers are to blame for everything. Let's just turn schools over to private corporations who get public funds with no guidelines how to spend them. Let's make sure teachers have to jump through all kinds of educational requirements, but pay them a wage they can barely live on. Let's give some benefits and make them pay 20% of their health care so they don't think too highly of themselves. Let them pay for school supplies out of their own pockets. Keep telling the teachers that they are failures and their schools are failing. And if their students don't meet arbitrary standards of growth, fire the teachers. After all, everyone should  be exactly the same. Yea, that'll help American education get better.

Who woulda thunk it, huh? Michigan legislators are highly paid STATE employees? But Michigan is a state with high unemployment, hanging in around 10%. In a state that put most of its eggs in the automotive basket, jobs are hard to find. Hmm. . . too bad the big 3 automakers didn't work on the electric car twenty or so years ago. They, and the rest of Michigan, would be sitting pretty right now. So much for hindsight.

Let's look at what's happening in the Michigan legislature right now.

How to Save $6.5 Million in Michigan

by 50sbaby

This diary is similar to one I posted last April. In that letter I detailed how much one must do to become a teacher in the state of Michigan, as well as the standards (GLCEs) set by the Michigan Dept. of Ed to teach second graders. Contrary to public opinion teaching is not an easy career, nor is it lucrative.

At the present time, Gov. Snyder has proposed huge cuts to education in Michigan including taking over $700 million earmarked for K-12 education and moving it to community colleges and universities. Really? Without quality education at the elementary level how does he expect anyone to get to higher education? Fortunately, the state board of education just recommended universal preschool in Michigan. They actually get it.

While this letter is primarily a challenge to the legislators in the state of Michigan, it is typical of what is going on in education in America today. The faulty reasoning is "education is failing so let's make more cuts." Read more below the fold.

Don't vote for Rick for Michigan!

by 50sbaby

I almost choked on my coffee as I was reading Daily Kos this morning. I saw several ads stating "Vote for Rick for Michigan". The ads refer to Rick Snyder. Snyder promotes himself as an "outsider", "not a politician" and good for Michigan. He's running on the Republican ticket.

I have news for Rick. As soon as he entered the race for governor of Michigan, he became a politician. His ads on tv are no different from the others. Snyder makes claims that are as exaggerated as any other politician. He is using the same tactic as the rest. Not a politician indeed!

There's a lot of discussion these days about education. It seems like education, or lack thereof, is at the root of all society's ills. Some say the fault is due to teachers, their unions, and protection of the teachers' incompetence.

Unions and teachers are also faulted for having summers off, earning undeserved high salaries, having excessive health insurance, being impossible to fire, sleeping at their desks, "driving expensive cars, wearing fancy clothes" (to quote another blogger) and using cell phones! Gee, I heard that any body can be a teacher, even a monkey, it's sooo easy. I guess they haven't heard what you have to do in some states, like Michigan, to become a teacher. Golly. They have to go to college and everything.

Outing Michigan's Legislators

by 50sbaby

The state of Michigan has much to offer the nation.  It has wonderful public and private universities, miles and miles of sandy beaches and coastlines, innovative industries, historic Motown and more. However, because Michigan had put all its eggs in one basket, namely the auto industry, it is now suffering greatly.  Unemployment has reached the all time high of 14-15 percent. Many homes have been foreclosed and people have left the state looking for employment. Former factories and warehouses sit vacant, creating blight where they was once activity and prosperity.

I was reading the blogs today about Rick Warren and the proposed anti-gay law in Uganda. As I read I realized many people seem to equate Christians with the right-wing. That is far from true. I know many Christians, myself included, that are Democrats. Let me tell you why.

The Bible is full of references telling us to help those less fortunate than ourselves.  In James 1:27 the Bible advises us to "look after orphans and widows in their distress". Hebrews 13:2-3 states "Do not forget to entertain (help, invite in) strangers for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are suffering as if you were mistreated yourselves." Also, Jesus said "I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me... I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."  Matthew 26:35-40.

I am surprised, no shocked, how many people do not understand why a Nobel Peace Prize is awarded. Many of the comments I have read on this site and others criticize Obama's Nobel Peace Prize for silly reasons.

One blogger wrote that Obama wasn't "nobel enough" to receive this award. Another blogger stated Obama wasn't in office long enough to get the peace prize. Yet another wrote that he hadn't done anything yet. Several bloggers said he received the peace prize because he wasn't G.W. Bush. None of these are needed to receive a Nobel Prize.

For those who don't know, Alfred Nobel established the Nobel Foundation to which he left his fortune in his last will, written in 1885.  He established 5 prize categories, namely the areas of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace.  Nobel's will stated that the peace prize was to be given to the "person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." (from Nobelprize.org). A committee of 5 would choose the peace prize winner. Other prizes have been added since Nobel established the 5 prizes in 1885.
