Interstate 77 outside Sissonville WV on Dec 11, 2012.
NTSB: Corroded pipe, lack of inspections led to gas explosion in W.V.
A corroded gas pipeline that had not been inspected in more than two decades contributed to an explosion in 2012 that destroyed homes and melted a section of Interstate 77 in Sissonville, W.Va., the National Transportation Safety Board said on Monday.
The explosion, just north of Charleston, grew into a raging fire 1,100 feet along the pipeline and more than 800 feet wide. It left a nearly 15-foot-deep crater just off the interstate and turned a picturesque valley with rural homes into a scorched moonscape with mailboxes melted to wood posts and charred foundations.
The 20-inch interstate transmission line ruptured at 12:41 p.m. Dec. 11. Despite several alerts at a Columbia Gas control center, the controller did not realize an explosion had happened for 12 minutes, the report said.
A line shutdown took an hour to complete and began only when someone from another gas company told Columbia about the rupture.
It was a near miracle that no one was killed when this gas line ruptured. Luckily this happened in a rural area but it still managed to close an interstate highway. Columbia Pipeline Group subsidiaries have about 15,000 miles of pipeline. The group reports it replaced more than 50 miles of pipeline last year. I know I feel safer.
With the latest news about Mayor Zimmer talking to the feds you just know that the vultures of hate and lies will soon take (right) wing and start circling her. Before they start their bogus narratives I wanted to get out some good background info on the Mayor.
As you may already know, Dawn Zimmer became the Mayor of Hoboken after the previous mayor was arrested in a FBI money laundering sting known as Operation Bid Rig. What you might not know is that Zimmer was approached by the FBI informant running the sting but she didn't bite.

Federal definition of terrorism:
(5) the term “domestic terrorism” means activities that—
(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State;
(B) appear to be intended—
(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;
(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or
(iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and
(C) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.
IANAL but it easily looks like (B)(i) is met and maybe also (B)(ii).
Received this in my email today. Signed and posting here for like minded individuals.
link to Move On petition to Overturn Citizens United
Citizens United was a disaster. It opened the floodgates for corporations to write big checks to fund right-wing special interest attacks, helping them pour $719 million into the 2012 elections.
The question is, what are we going to do about it? How are we going to stuff this "corporations are people, elections are auctions, democracy is for sale" mess into the Dumpster of Bad Ideas?
Here's how: A constitutional amendment that puts power back in the hands of the people. The actual, human people.

NYT has posted a deep look into the efforts to salvage Healthcare.gov.
As a small coterie of grim-faced advisers shuffled into the Oval Office on the evening of Oct. 15, President Obama’s chief domestic accomplishment was falling apart 24 miles away, at a bustling high-tech data center in suburban Virginia. ...
For 90 excruciating minutes, a furious and frustrated president peppered his team with questions, drilling into the arcane minutiae of web design as he struggled to understand the scope of a crisis that suddenly threatened his presidency.
“We created this problem we didn’t need to create,” Mr. Obama said
I learned from this posting on Rawstory that John Stossel wants a open market on organs.
This upsets people, but I'm upset it's not legal, Stossel insisted. In the one country where it is legal, nobody waits for a kidney.
Well nobody with money that is. Of course the only country that allows organ selling is that bastion of the Free Market Iran. So Fox News is now advocating that we follow the lead of Iran which also believes in the cutting off of hands and feet as well as public whippings as appropriate punishments. It's easy to see where this line of thinking goes.
Pittsburgh woman finds incredible deal with Affordable Care Act
A retired Pittsburgh school employee with a per-existing condition of Type 2 diabetes found that her insurance will drop dramatically from $509/month to $70/month. Then with the help of tax credits and another subsidy called the Cost Sharing Benefit her final cost will be $1.11/month.
The above video report is from WTAE-TV Pittsburgh. Glad to see at least one TV report with the upside of Obamacare.
This blog posting by Charles P. Pierce about Ralph Reed on the Morning Joe show is so short I should only quote one line from it.
Listening to Mika Brzezinski talk to Mark Halperin about politics was like watching a seal and a goat recite Shakespeare.
How Ralph Reed is allowed anywhere near the adult's table after all his crimes is a mystery to me. You really need to read the rest of it.
In his current posting on Redstate Erick has a fear because:
Evangelicals have, over the past few decades, gotten involved in the rough and tumble world of politics sometimes too politically and sometimes exploitatively.
This has driven up the cynicism of young Christians already being wooed by a world that cleverly casts out Christian sinners as hypocrites, helping undermine trust.
How is it possible that anyone could see Christians as hypocrites?
Could it possibly be because of self-professed Christian Erick Erickson who posted the following on his twitter account?
The nation loses the only goat fucking child molester to ever serve on the Supreme Court in David Souter's retirement.
I can't claim to be a Christian like Erick Erickson but I do remember the Commandment "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour". Unless Erick has some evidence that the rest of the country isn't privy too I'd call his statement a bald faced lie. And pretty vindictive at that.
Maybe what he really needs is someone to explain the meaning of hypocrisy.
Never thought of Obama this way but after having read this Slate article by David Weigel I looked at the shutdown a bit differently.
He was not posturing. Republicans failed to appreciate the president's strengthened position vis-à-vis 2011, when he had lost the House and needed to win re-election. They had a theory that the world had changed since 1995, and the "optics" of a shutdown were changeable. Republicans didn't realize that Obama was doing his best impression of Rorschach after he gets jailed in Watchmen. He wasn't locked in with them. They were locked in with him. *
I read Redstate so you don't have to.
Listen, pal. Let me explain something to you. What the Tea Party has
done is spawned some of the great Americans who are speaking truth to
the masses. People like Sarah Palin. Go read her Facebook updates and
try to tell me with a straight face that she isn't winning hearts and
minds. She has millions of followers who look to her to articulate a
vision and provide clarity to a movement. This movement is going
places. Once we clear out the driftwood in the House and bring in more
people who share this vision, the old, dead, RINO GOP guard will be
gone. It may take time, but the winning of elections is coming. Mark my words
If we can convince more Republicans follow this advice then 2014 will be a year of rainbows and magic ponies for me and my fellow Democrats.
