Not surprising to anyone who has been observing and participating in social media for the past 10 years, the very real disinformation campaigns by foreign actors designed to foment discord and chaos in the United States, particularly the 2020 election have begun in earnest.
According to Politico , review of recent data extracted from Twitter and from other platforms, as well as interviews with data scientists and digital campaign strategists shows concentrated attacks on Democratic Presidential Candidates. The goal of the coordinated barrage appears to be “undermining the nascent candidacies through the dissemination of memes, hashtags, misinformation and distortions of their positions.” But the divisive nature of many of the posts also hints at a broader effort to sow discord and chaos within the Democratic presidential primary.
According to Politico, “The main targets appear to be Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas), four of the most prominent announced or prospective candidates for president.”
Now I don’t want to be alarmist, but bear in mind EVERYTHING YOU SEE ONLINE IS SUSPECT. Certainly some of these bad actors are cued up here on KOS. Everything you read and hear is suspect. Like Randi Rhodes used to say, “do your homework”.
In the meantime be very suspicious of flame wars and their participants.
Except me.
