I'm tired.

by MyNameIs

I live in Boston. It's been home for 7 years. It took more than half of those years to understand this place, grow to love the quirkiness, and make it my own. It's like no other city in the US. When the bombs went off at Copley on Monday, I was at work in my lab. I had wanted to go down to see my last marathon before I move on to the next phase of life. To mark that off the "to do" list. But I watched a friend run the first year I was here and got asked to do something at work so figured I could count that one marked.

Word spread through my lab, and I spent the next 3 hours listening to the news. But I didn't really feel anything. I thought maybe it just seemed too far away even though I could see helicopters from my window (at least until the FAA restriction), and I could hear a constant cry of ambulances through inch thick glass. I work at the Longwood Medical Area, so a lot were headed in and out of my area.

I'm elated by the move to credit unions and small banks.  I've been with credit unions since 2002 when I closed my account with Washington Mutual.  The reason for the move was that they instituted a new policy wherein they would no longer charge customers of other banks to use WAMU ATMs, and yet they still charged a service fee for their own customers to withdraw from non WAMU ATMs.  So I walked into the bank and asked the teller...

Me: Let me get this straight, if I move my money to another bank I can use their ATMs for free and also use your ATMs for free.  But if I stay with WAMU I can only use your ATMs.

Him: Yes, that's correct.

Me: I'd like a cashiers check for the balance of my accounts and would like to close my accounts please.

These are the Uighurs I know

by MyNameIs

I am heartbroken and sick with worry waiting to hear from my friends in Urumqi. I have sent five emails and three texts, and the reports of a communications blackout are correct – I am hearing nothing back from any of them. And since their voices are silent and too many of you only know the Uighurs who were recently released from Guantanamo, I want you to know my friends.  I have omitted names and am debating the addition of photos.  I want you to see their faces, but I fear for their safety.

My personal "sex education"

by MyNameIs

Forgive me for repeating an oft-stated story regarding sexuality, teen pregnancy, and abortion issues, but the recent dairies on S403 and Janusdog's beautiful and sad personal story, I feel compelled to vent and to share my own...

So I just listened to the mayor of LA saying on CNN that he was notified of the "alleged" 2002 plot to crash a plane into the Library Tower in LA on THE DAY BEFORE the US public got the scoop.  And that he didn't get near the details we got UNTIL WE GOT THEM.  Am I the only one who thinks that this is super suspicious?

I was already outraged enough by what I read here and what I see on the news.  I don't know why I had to go over to FreeRepublic and Redstate, but for some reason I felt compelled in investigate their response to this disaster and the continuing disaster.  Maybe it was the hope I held out that Bush's minions might have seen a little bit of enlightenment of what their dear (mis)leader has really been up to, but no...

This Monday, May 2nd, James Dobson's organization, Focus on the Family, will be airing two advertisements for their Focus on Your Child membership program. Their rationale, from President Jim Daly, is "The show was all about Focus on the Family principles. It was boundaries and using the time-out chair, respect for authority and good parenting skills."

But is this really what Focus on Your Child advocates?

In the words of Mrs. Broflovski...

by MyNameIs

what What WHAT?!?!?!?!

Brauer told Reuters she believes doctors will eventually begin ordering women to abort disabled children, or refuse to treat them after birth.

"They'll force women to kill their children ... It will be like China. It's the next logical step," she told Reuters.

I was just toodling over at the 700Club site, which I frequent for entertainment value and to check my blood pressure from time to time.  The concept is frightening: to do God's will, one must have lots and lots of children so that they can all grow up to vote and fulfill His plan.  Since us libruls are getting married and having fewer children later in life, they're pretty sure this is a sure fire thing. Unfortunately, they may be right. Excerpts to follow...
