I have an idea. I want to start a SILENT BOYCOTT of WANTS! I’m not asking people to stop buying things that are basic Needs, but to fore-go getting things that are Wants.
Now lets me break this down a bit, Needs are things you need to survive (Food, Shelter, Clothing, & Transportation) in life, but wants are things that you really don’t need to survive. I’ll also be asking you to look first at small businesses for getting your needs taken care of during this Boycott.
So here are some examples of a want vs a need: Best-Buy is having a big sale on TV’s, but the one I have is working great, going out and getting a new TV is just a want, because you really don’t need it. OR My TV just went out (thank my lucky stars, I hate watching TV), and a small electronic store is having a sale on TV’s (not as great as Best-Buy), but my family likes watching DVD’s, so this would be a need.
So the idea behind this is to make Needs more important then wants, and choose how you spend your money, and who should benefit from your spending. I’m at a point were I have to ask myself each time I go to the store and see something “is this item a need or want”, if it’s a need then I’ll check to see if it’s something that will some how benefit me for buying it, otherwise it’s a want, and I always have to ask “Why do I want this, and how does it benefit me.” Well don’t think I’m asking people to give up wants altogether, just try to buy them from a small business were possible. When going out for dinner, choose a small family restaurant instead of a place like The Olive Garden, simple thing like that. I guess this would be about taking care of Main Street vs taking care of Corporations.
Well every-bodies Wants are different, while our needs are so alike.
List of basic NEEDS:
1) Food
2) Shelter (includes basic utility needs)
3) Clothing
4) Transportation
List of WANTS:
1) A new IPhone, when the one you have is last years model.
2) A new car, but again you just bought one 3 years ago.
If you have any ideas on how to get this going or comments, please share them.
