After receiving a letter from the New Jersey State AFL-CIO “Working Families” (I am a proud cardholder in IATSE Local 632) urging me to vote for a mouth breathing, knuckle dragging Repub candidate for our Town Council, I called the statewide labor organization to register my objections. I left a message with the woman who answered the phone asking that someone who gave shit (obviously she didn’t) please to call me back as I felt they had erred in their endorsement(I have yet to hear anything)
I subsequently posted the following on the website of the aforementioned New Jersey AFL-CIO in response to their mailing:
You people clearly do not bother with due diligence. You have endorsed Louis Fontana for Town Council in Little Falls. Mr. Fontana is a backward looking Rethuglican. He is the stereotypical low information Trump supporter. His agenda has nothing to do with working families or the American labor movement. He holds a political patronage job which, by the grace of God, avails him the benefits of union membership. He hypocritically takes advantage of his union provided good fortune while failing to support our cause. His Democratic opponents, the Damiano Team, are endorsed by labor's TRUE friends including Congressman Bill Pascrell, Assemblyman Tom Gilbin and State Party Chairman John Currie, among others too numerous to list. Shame on you AFL-CIO. Withdraw this endorsement NOW!
It is truly dispiriting that a potentially powerful source for good, NJ AFL-CIO couldn’t be bothered to vet candidates before endorsing them. This failing is particularly egregious in light of the fact that one of Fontana’s running mates is a teacher who sought endorsement and financial backing from the New Jersey Education Association. NJEA did its’ due diligence and subsequently refused to support the running mate in any way, shape or form.
I ask my fellow New Jersey Democrats and my union brothers and sisters to call on our New Jersey Democratic leaders and elected officials as well as the New Jersey AFL-CIO and demand that the NJ AFL-CIO rescind this misplaced endorsement immediately. I would further ask that they make restorative actions (mailings, phone calls, canvassing) to undo the damage they have already done.
