Notre Dame broadcasts sports on 6 Limbaugh stations. Purdue on 4 and Indiana University on 1.

That's just the Limbaugh stations- they may also broadcast on other republican radio stations. For a small portion of the total media licensing revenues those schools receive, those stations and their loudmouthed Republican bigots get to sell their bigotry while riding the sports mascots of those universities.

They put those logos all over their racist bigoted megaphones and they get community credibility and attract advertising dollars with that relationship.

If those universities decided to honor their mission statements they would declare their intent not to renew the radio portion of those media licenses and would look for apolitical alternatives. They could do that quite easily, right? Why not.

Removing themselves from those idiotic relationships would also end their endorsement of everything RW radio stands for -attacks on all aspects of public education and its funding, promotion of global warming denial, opposition to raising the minimum wage, and everything else the irrational Republicans stand for.

And many of those stations might have to change their programming.

90 major university football programs broadcast on 267 Limbaugh stations. That's almost 45% of his 600 stations. That is only for the higher rated football programs and omits schools that may only have basketball, etc.

All those Limbaugh stations generally helped sell this legislation with 25 years of bigotry and all of them specifically helped sell this hate legislation in association with their support for the Hobby Lobby bigots and other efforts by ALEC and other pro big business think tanks. All of those Indiana stations helped sell this specific legislation.

Those Indiana stations are big vote getters for Gov Mike Pence and the other Republican bigots and liars in that state.

My local Limbaugh station blowhard is defending Pence right now, probably using exactly the same rationalization as they all were given. And likely all or most of the local and national bigots on every one of those 1000+ Republican/ALEC/Koch radio stations will be or are defending him. That is the wind in his sails.

So students at ALL of those 90 universities could protest this bigotry and help prevent more.

BTW, like a number of Republican politicians, Pence is a former RW radio host.

NOTE: Indiana University Hoosiers broadcast on 36 radio stations- i won't check them all for RW radio but I'll bet it's more than the 1 I counted previously from a much smaller list.

The campus protests in Bloomington at Indiana U are being undercut by their own university.

Whenever the country looks like it might be distracted by some accidental lapse toward truth and common sense, the right wing media managers can usually distract us.

Such national learning events can be problematic for maintaining a well-disinformed public required to vote and act politically against its own interests. Like getting poor people to vote for politicians who pee on them by selling them something called trickle down economics.

In this case they used a Hillary 'scandal' they were probably saving for later in the election. I think, but am not certain, the story was used to distract us and the MSM from the destruction of Bill O'Reilly, one of RW media's biggest and most important liars.

Like Rush Limbaugh, O'Reilly is caught lying all the time. But those are political lies, often well planned, coordinated, and reinforced. Every day, RW think tanks lay out a tasty smorgasbord of prechewed and oft-repeated talking points for the MSM to pick through. The Limbaughs and O'Reillys and Hannitys and hundreds of other talk radio and Fox liars do a lot of prechewing and regurgitating, reinforcing the lies and making it much easier for them and anyone else to repeat the lie/talking point with certainty.

Unlike Limbaugh, O'Reilly stares his adoring audience straight in the face when he lies from his "No Spin Zone". And in this case the lies in question were not political lies. O'Reilly was basically caught lying about the size of his manhood.

O'Reilly's value is measured by his ability, like Limbaugh, to be believed without a doubt when he tells his certainty addicted authoritarian audience with total certitude that his shit doesn't stink.

He sits almost as high as Limbaugh at the top of that pyramid of certitude on our currency. The alternate reality they helped create and reinforce, and its effectiveness for mobilizing the authoritarian base, depends on maintaining their godly/kingly certitude.

The excuse that OReilly is not a real journalist and Fox News is not real news (now often labeling itself online as News From Fox News, in case we forget), are not a good excuse for helping RW media brush this off with another distraction. Fox and the Republican radio stations that it reinforces have been dominant players in the dumbing down and pollution of local and national discourse and the feedback mechanisms a democracy needs to be truly representative. They are the biggest political correctness cops and censors-by-threat in the country.

Whatever you think about Hillary's 'emailgate' 'scandal' it should not be allowed to distract our media from exposing frauds like O'Reilly.

Can America have rational fact-based discussion about race or any other major issue?

Most Americans wanting to have a rational discussion about Mike Brown's murder and the killing of young unarmed black men and boys by police won't know what's blasting from the 1000 coordinated radio stations that lead the Republican propaganda operation.

And they don't know how much those radio stations parasitize professional and college sports and its black athletes. More than 28% of racist Rush Limbaugh stations rely on the sports programs of our publicly funded colleges for community credibility and advertising revenue.

Republican radio reaches 50 million people a week and will continue to attack the "thug" Mike Brown and his supporters and make excuses for Darren Wilson and prosecutor/defense attorney McCulloch for the foreseeable future. That will go on as long as the Republicans find it useful. They have that control. Just like they did with Trayvon Martin. I heard it this afternoon from the local talker on my local Limbaugh/Savage station.

They are the same stations that egg on mayors and police departments to crack down on protestors. Like they did with Occupy Wall Street.

The Republican higher-ups like race related violence. It's good ammunition for their racist blowhards on radio and Fox TV. It ramps up the fear that increases the value of the unchallenged certitude authoritarians need to sell lies. It's why they waited for nighttime to announce the injustice.

Michael (aka Savage) Wiener is a regular on hundreds of those stations. I recently recorded about 6 minutes at the start of his November 19 show and got his take on Ferguson. He starts with President Obama and his executive order on immigration and equates him with Cambodian genocidal maniac Pol Pot's use of "street garbage" to relate him to the rioting Wiener hopes for. The same way Limbaugh hoped for black on white violence in post Katrina New Orleans.

Barack Hussein Obama said he is going to act within the law. Moussolini said he was acting within the law when he violated the law. Hitler said was that he was acting within the law when he needed some living space for the Germans.
Pol pot did it legally. That's the mountain of human skulls in Cambodia. It started with a nice professor in Cambodia who went to Paris to study Marxism. He came home a dictator. He arrested everyone the middle class, everyone with eyeglasses. He elevated the street garbage in Cambodia the street garbage who never went to college, who never went to high school, who never went to grade schools. The street garbage in Cambodia were elevated to the leadership positions in Cambodia. They were 13 14-year-old thugs, does it sound familiar, and they were given red scarves, red scarves, to wear so they could be part of this identified gang under Pol Pot.
Limbaugh (and maybe others) have suggested Obama organized the recent influx of young Central American refugees as part of a strategy to bring in diseases like ebola, increase the number of Democratic voters, and form a secret (brown) army/gang.
And they started to arrest the entire middle class architects- doctors, lawyers, teachers, social workers, dentists, anyone with eyeglasses was considered a counterrevolutionary under Pol Pot, the mild-mannered Marxist professor who work came back to Cambodia and started to institute what he said was fairness- policies of fairness. He said that the Cambodia had been taken over by a parasitical middle class and they just want to make things fair and so he unleashed 13 of 14-year-old garbage on the middle class along the lines of Ferguson. Yes I'll say all go online and say the garbage in the streets of Ferguson, they don't work. Tell me what they do for living. They’re parasites on society. Tell me how people can be in the streets for months at a time without any known source of income and not be called a parasite. Explain that to me. Tell me how you can explain that to me. So if you think there are no parallels in history that means you do not know your history and you condemned to repeat it.
He goes on:
demonic man in the White House
dictator
gangs in the streets being run by all of the social activists
street rats
the vermin in the street
what they do best which is selling drugs or whatever they do to make a living
Then in typical reality-denying hypocrisy, he blames Obama for our crumbling infrastructure, schooling system, poverty, unemployment, health care, etc....

He's creating the America that he and Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett and Michelle Obama and the other four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse are creating- a new America right in front of your eyes...
At least 28%, or more than 170 of Limbaugh's stations, depend on major 'liberal' university sports programs for community credibility and ad revenue. I don't know how many of Wiener's do also. Many of those stations probably couldn't survive without those relationships, especially after the heroic work from the StopRush and FlushRush crew who are being doxxed by iHeart/Clear Channel.

Parasites? The talk radio gods use our public schools while they attack teachers, students, and public education and try to defund it so it can be privatized. Talk about parasites.

Three of the major publicly funded universities in Kansas and Missouri broadcast sports on 11 stations that headline Rush Limbaugh. University of Missouri lets Limbaugh ride the Missouri Tiger on 7 stations, the Kansas State Wildcat on 3 stations, and the Kansas Jayhawk on 1 Limbaugh station.

How many cops hear this stuff from radio stations endorsed by our major universities? These stations are often the loudest stations in local or national emergencies.

Police and soldiers around Ferguson might think differently about what Limbaugh and Savage are saying if communities and students made it clear it's not okay for a bunch of racist, misogynist liars to ride their sports mascots.

What if America's professional and college athletes refused to be used to sell the racist Republican propaganda?

One of the primary jobs of those stations is to amplify Republican and teabagger positions on national events like the murders of Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown and use them to make racism acceptable, scare teabaggers into buying more guns, voting against gun control, etc.

All of those 1000-plus radio stations defend officer Darren Wilson and the Furguson police department and excuse their actions. Like they did with the killer of Trayvon Martin. Our own universities undermine our ability to address important issues and events. Here's another example of that destructive relationship as it undermines important student activism: Denise Oliver Velez's recent diary, Roofies, rape, and 'It's On Us', links to a video by University of Oregon students (calling themselves Oregon University Ducks) contributed to the national 'It's On Us' campaign against sexual violence. Meanwhile, Ducks football broadcasts on 2 Limbaugh stations. Oregon State broadcasts on 4 Limbaugh stations. The Ducks just played the University of Colorado Buffaloes, who's students are also active against sexual violence, and that game was broadcast on the loudest Limbaugh station in CO.

Police and soldiers around Ferguson might think differently about what Limbaugh and Savage are saying if communities and students made it clear it's not okay for a bunch of racist, misogynist liars to ride their sports mascots.

Rush Limbaugh is sometimes correctly recognized as the real leader of the Republican Party. No one better represents the principles and morals of the GOP.

He's become more independent since they lost the White House and voters cut Karl Rove loose from central control of national talk radio PSYOPS, but Limbaugh is still the default leader of the Republicans' best messaging tool.

Today (11/17/2014) Limbaugh's reiterating his support for shutting down the government again. He disagreed with Fox's Karl Rove and Britt Hume, who recently said it would be a bad idea for Republicans.

Last time Democrats seemed to be caught by surprise. They should not assume it won't happen again.

Limbaugh is the same loudmouth who drummed up similar support for defaulting on the debt in 2011 by suggesting for months that it would be no big deal and would merely force Obama and the Democrats to give them what they want. With that and egging on loons like Cruz, he should get a lot of credit for the compromise sequestration. But he doesn't.

Maybe it's the good cop bad cop routine, but his purpose or aim (his or something he's paid for) is to pump up the dittohead teabagger (the Republican base) support for the Ted Cruz faction and encourage him/them to try to shut government down again.

Rove and Hume are lesser messengers, more sane, representing what Limbaugh may sometimes refer to as the GOP establishment. Who will 'win' this? At the very least Limbaugh and whoever is pushing him are applying the same suicidal march-to-the-edge-of-the-cliff negotiating pressure. He knows he has not been blamed/credited for his big part the last time and has no problem doing it again. Limbaugh notes that Ted Cruz got a lot of the blame/credit for the government shutdown and got reelected! And Republicans just won big! So, what's so bad about going suicidal.

Impeachment moves will follow similar patterns, with years of unchallenged free-for-all attacks on Obama by the talk radio gods to build on.

Will we do this all over again and end up on the edge with more compromise by Democrats trying to deal with the insane faction of the Republican Party?

If we do it will because the Democratic Party and liberal/progressive organizations continue to give Republican radio and its gods a free speech free ride. Democrats need to do something different. Liberals/progressives need to go on the offensive, and Republican radio is a great place to start.

By the way, he's also been attacking net neutrality in support of Cruz, saying the US government and Obama want more control over the internet. Will that old radio technology beat the internet again?

Discuss

That's the dominant message from more than 1000 Republican radio stations. And Democrats want to tweak their messaging skills.

Until a bunch of citizens stood up to protect Sandra Fluke from six hundred radio stations full of shit flung at her by Rush Limbaugh, there has been very little challenge to those talk radio gods.

Limbaugh did the same thing to Anita Hill, so we got Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court.

When the Clintons tried health reform, they did the same thing to Grandma Single Payer. Every year they add a few more myths about the failures of single payer systems in other select parts of the world. The Canadian health care system was particularly problematic for them, with people waiting months for severe pain relief and terminal cancer treatment, or members of the Canadian government coming down to the US for better care ( I think I remember he went to Florida for cosmetic stomach stapling). Decades of that.

And Sir Global Warming. The guy's a total idiot. It snowed today! And for the next hour we have a motivational speaker-turned-scientist from the nearest Koch foundation to tell us all the reasons why Sir Global Warming IS A HOAX!

What a lot of city-dwelling Democrats and music lovers everywhere may not know is that in most parts of the country, where even the most lonely states have two senators, there are NO free alternatives for politics while driving or working.

That's been going on, basically unchallenged, for 25 years. Republican radio reaches about 50 million a week, last I heard. That doesn't include friends, family, and co-workers who were too busy and tired to pay attention, and have to get it second hand.

It's like watching a football game and the other team sneaks on five extra players, and they score goal after goal. And no one notices they have extra players. The losing team's fans then complain about their team's performance and discuss what could be done better.

Messaging? The talk radio monopoly gave Karl Rove and others like him the opportunity to take the most odious political strategies national, invisible to those they harm, and practically for free. Other than some mocking of Limbaugh and a few other talkers by MSNBC, the closest thing to significant mainstream political challenge (Media Matters is not mainstream, IMO) to the talk radio monopoly is what happens after a Democratic rep goes on a once-a-week TV show and the moderator asks, "Why has Obamacare failed so spectacularly?"

Here's one way Democrats can 'message': when Republicans in media says something stupid or false, why not just say, "Well, Chuck, that's what the leader of the Republican Party, Rush Limbaugh says, but the fact is..."

Our democracy isn't so bought out and dysfunctional yet that most representatives still don' t have to listen to, or pretend to listen to constituents. The Left (my def: liberals, progressives, Democrats) allows Republican radio to create made-to-order constituencies for any occasion, as they are now to oppose Obama's new attorney general nominee, Loretta Lynch. Like they did Van Jones. Like so many decent people before them, and many liberals and progressives in primaries and elections around the country, and many progressive legislative efforts, and more to come. As long as the Left collectively ignores Republican radio it cannot collectively claim it really supported them and 'got their back'.

Good luck with the new Paul Wellstones, Howard Deans, Elizabeth Warrens.

Until the Left breaks the Republican radio monopoly it will continue to generate frightened outraged constituencies to intimidate and enable representatives and media with their well-established alternate reality. Seriously challenging Republican radio will make it unavoidably clear to media and politicians that those constituencies they serve are the disinformed spawn of a few billionaire's think tanks and a few hundred loudmouthed liars and bigots- not the 'popular opinion' they pretend to be.

If you want the Democratic Party to go left, or if you want elected Democrats to do ANYTHING you want, why wouldn't you do something about the political 2x4 pushing them right? Are you going to wait for them to figure it out and do something about it? Are you going to berate them until they figure it out and do something about it?

And do Americans have any excuse to keep allowing their publicly-funded schools to support a messaging machine that has been attacking and lying about teachers, students, public education, and science every day for the last 20 years? Are there any students, faculty, alumni, and community who find this acceptable? More than 170, or 28%, of Rush Limbaugh stations depend on relationships like that. The same stations even work to defeat state legislation to lower student loan interest rates! And they have a lot to say about teachers salaries and who the next university regents and presidents are.

There will be more obstruction than cooperation with Obama his last two years. They want to destroy him. The racist motherfuckers want to kill him. The more insane ones think he is a demon.

If you want to turn the next two years around and win supermajorities in 2016, stop ignoring that thing under the living room rug.

In another diary soon I will have more suggestions on how to destroy the Republican radio monopoly.

Dear Democratic Party,

I'm going to write this here, since I doubt you'll get it if I send it to Congresswoman Pelosi or the other very busy representatives or staff in the Democratic Party.

You're trying to keep up with the Koch brothers and other billionaires and corporations as they shovel their dark money into TV and print but you've really been getting your ass kicked by Republican radio, the dark media. All those radio stations have been yelling over you and defining you for a good part of three decades. They make factual sane discussions of local and national issues impossible. And a lot of it's free for them.

Meanwhile, a lot of liberals and 'lefties' who ignore or undervalue the talk radio factor think you're not trying hard enough. They can't stand to listen to it so it's basically a non-factor in their evaluation of Obama and the Democratic Party. They think you can't get anything done because you don't want to. They think you moved right the last 20 years because you "lack spine".

Some of them and a lot of Republican trolls are talking about not voting. A friend and neighbor just told me that, and she's a gay hippie.

In a diary some months ago I showed with the Kelly Reindfleisch emails that Scott Walker was a regular user of Wisconsin Republican radio talkers.

Hundreds of other Republican politicians are doing the same and will benefit similarly in November. The degree of coordination and friendliness will vary, but the state and national Republican Party apparatus and their associated think tanks will be using those 1200 or so radio stations to maximum capacity.

There will be interviews with Republican candidates in which the candidates will distort or lie and the 'host' will not call them on it. And the host will repeat lies and distortions to the candidate and the candidate won't refute them. After the interview, callers, and possibly paid callers and Republican campaign staff, can add a rumor or two about the Democratic candidate.

Campaign staff as well as surrogates from the think tanks, etc., will also make visits. The hosts themselves will repeat and reinforce whatever the party wants them to, when they want them to. Much of the material Republican candidates use and repeat is reinforced (and often originally created) with Republican radio.

Because the StopRush and FlushRush efforts have educated and scared off a lot of advertisers those radio stations are filling air time with Republican political ads and ads from brand new groups never heard from before, saying whatever they want. For the rest of October the air waves will be full of it.

Republicans win win and be close in a lot of elections merely because the Democratic Party has no answer for their best weapon.

I have a couple of suggestions for doing something about it.

1) I describe here one way to use a Mac to record and transcribe what Republican radio is saying about candidates and issues.

I'll bet in a few days or week a couple of hard working Democrats could figure out how to shorten and automate the procedure and set up a way for staff and candidates to do quick searches through the transcripts for names or issues every couple of days.

The Democratic Party could set up such systems in every state. Or it could be centralized and make the transcripts available to the campaigns. The party could send out alerts and relevant transcripts and recorded copies that a campaign might find useful. Maybe there's material that could be used in debates.

At the national Democratic Party level an index of topics and their frequencies by state and national level would be useful.

The buzz those radio stations create cannot be ignored. By making it readable and visible it will be less effective, less likely to catch Democrats by surprise, and politicians and media may become reluctant to repeat it.

2) There are Democratic students all over the country who's activism is being undone by their own and other colleges and universities. Here's a list of more than 70 colleges that rent their sports team logos to Rush Limbaugh radio stations. Many more schools than that broadcast sports on Republican radio stations.

Those stations will play a part in elections that directly and indirectly impact the schools, the students, and many related issues. There are students trying to get their schools to divest from fossil fuels while talkers like Limbaugh do global warming denial from the radio station that broadcasts their games. How can a school be serious about reducing violence against women while the loudest misogynist in the country might as well be riding around the state on the team mascot's back?

Those stations can play a part in regent elections and shortening the list of 'acceptable' candidates in consideration for university president. They consistently attack teachers, their unions, and public education, and will work hard to defeat efforts to increase funding for schools and education in general. Those stations are working to increase student tuition around the country.

For those who think the money is worth pissing all over a school's mission statement, the proportion of fees the licensing company sends to the school for the radio portion of the overall media licensing relationship is probably a very small.

In 2013/14, a radio station will pay Westwood One/Dial Global $1500 to broadcast a championship NCAA basketball game. How much of that does the university get after the licensing company takes their cut? Details of licensing agreements between state funded schools and licensing companies are usually kept confidential, even from school administration.

One of the best things Democratic and liberal student activists could do to bring change is demand their schools look for apolitical alternatives for broadcasting their sports. Some of those stations may have to change format or begin to offer balance in order to maintain those very important associations. That could open opportunities for liberal radio, one of the Democratic Party's best assets.

Sincerely,

A Regular Voter Who Thinks You Could Do A Lot Better With My Donations

Discuss

There's only a month left in this amazingly important election cycle, not counting all the recounts necessary to ensure Obama isn't stealing elections with illegal and dead voters. And old voters, and brown voters, and student voters without fingerprint IDs. That could take a while if they don't like the results.

And the primary mechanism they will use to force their irrational will will be Republican radio.

All elections, even in the bluest coastal areas, are impacted by what the talk radio blowhards are yelling from over 1000 coordinated radio stations. Apparently Obama is bringing in the ebola. Or is negligent and impeachable for allowing it here.

Republicanradio.org or republiconradio.org will provide a start for recording and transcribing republican radio as it trashes democrats and liberals and excuses the lunacy and corruption on the right.

The site also summarizes some of the points I've made here for about 10 years.

I have few social media skills..... Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here is a part of it:

WHY REPUBLICAN RADIO
IS SO EFFECTIVE FOR SELLING LIES AND PROPAGANDA:

IT'S A MONOPOLY: 95% of political talk radio is Republican. In most parts of the country there are no alternatives for free politics while driving or working. The monopoly actively reduces the radio stations available to liberal and moderate talk show hosts. There is no significant talk radio competition to challenge its messaging dominance. The loudest advocates for free market capitalism hide behind and work for a monopoly.

IT'S LOUD AND IT'S EVERYWHERE: More than 1000 radio stations, including many of the loudest stations in the country. That’s an average of 20 per state, reaching 50 million Americans every week. Talk radio stations may be the only sources for local news, traffic, weather, and sports in an area. They may be the loudest stations in national emergencies.

IT'S COORDINATED: On important issues at critical times, all Republican radio stations will pump out the same talking points as instructed. National and local GOP and related think tanks supply material, topics, and guests coordinated for national and local political objectives. It provides the groundwork repetition for everything Republican. Republican radio’s more visible little brother, Fox ‘News’, also helps coordination.

Rush Limbaugh and other major talkers set the national tone but can also focus considerable attention to a local level when they name names and places and repeat them a few times.

The local talker’s job depends on following the party line. They and their callers reinforce previous messaging from national talkers and can play a significant part in local politics. On a major station, staff and talkers may have close connections to Republican elected officials, like WIS governor Scott Walker and Milwaukee talker Charlie Sykes, as demonstrated in the Reindfleisch emails.

IT DOMINATES MESSAGING IN THE US:  There is no louder buzz machine on the planet. A Democratic president only has the bully pulpit when he’s on it. When 400 talkers reinforce each other with the same talking points and memes from 1000 radio stations they can drown out truth and common sense. And they can keep it going as long as necessary.

IT ENABLES AND PUSHES CORPORATE MEDIA TO PORTRAY THE INTERESTS OF A SMALL MINORITY AS MAINSTREAM: It excuses racism, misogyny, homophobia, and ignorance to make them ‘acceptable’. It enables vast amounts of denial and hypocrisy.

REPUBLICAN RADIO GETS A FREE SPEECH FREE RIDE: The only significant direct challenge to Republican radio the last 25 years is the ongoing StopRush, FlushRush, and BoycottRush efforts to educate Rush Limbaugh advertisers as to the misogyny and hate they help support.

ITS TALKERS ARE UNCHALLENGED: While liberal talkers encourage opposing viewpoints, Republican talkers seldom take callers that will contradict them. They're paired with call screeners for protection and use speciaalized software to prioritize preferred callers, including paid callers. Since they can't be challenged in real time they're always right, and lies sell better when delivered with unchallenged certitude.

PAID CALLERS are sometimes used to inject rumors, reinforce propaganda, and praise the hosts.

IT'S PRACTICALLY FREE FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY: Advertisers pay station operating costs and donor-supported think tanks supply much of the propaganda and coordination. The Republican political money advantage in TV advertising is overvalued when compared with their radio advantage.

IT IS ENDORSED BY HUNDREDS OF PUBLICLY FUNDED SCHOOLS: Many Republican radio stations broadcast professional, college, and high school sports. The association brings them commmunity credibility and advertising dollars while they attack teachers and public education, and spread global warming denial, racism, and misogyny.

IT'S ALWAYS REPUBLICAN FRIENDLY: The Republican Party and its politicians and organizations expect full support and cooperation from Republican radio talkers. Republican politicians expect major corruption and incompetence to be ignored or excused while Democrats should expect minor mistakes to be distorted and exaggerated.

IT SHORT-CIRCUITS DEMOCRACY WITH ALTERNATE REALITIES: Republican think tanks monitor local and national events and sentiment and combine their radio advantage with PR campaigns to short circuit the fact-based discussions that a democracy depends on for solutions and reform. Long term unchallenged repetition on a national level has distorted important issues and makes fact-based dialogue on climate change, health care, racism, immigration, and gun control practically impossible.

IT CONSTRUCTS AND DIRECTS MADE-TO-ORDER CONSTITUENCIES: Well-timed messaging is used to motivate public outrage, fear, and ‘concern’, largely based on exaggeration, distortion and disinformation. Timing and coordination and volume allow minority Republican radio constituencies to be represented as "popular opinion" (eg. Tea Party). They are used to enable or intimidate politicians and media and push legislation. Republican radio is the loudest political correctness cop and censor-by-threat in the US.

IT BEATS TV, INTERNET, AND OTHER MEDIA FOR SELLING LIES: Other media leave a record that can be examined and challenged and have to at least pretend to present other viewpoints. You can easily turn the channel or the page to find other sources for politics. Corporate media is more significant for what it leaves out, and the internet is still fairly democratic, with many choices. Republican radio is easier than TV to control at a local level.

IT'S ALEC'S BEST FRIEND: The success of ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) in electing candidates and passing and stopping legislation on the local level corresponds directly with the rise of Republican radio. So does the record historic rise in political partisanship and gridlock.

IT'S INVISIBlE TO DEMOCRATS AND LIBERALS - THEY DON'T LISTEN TO IT: The Democratic Party as well as liberal/progressive/democratic organizations and their supporters are regularly caught by surprise because they evaluate their strategies and the failings of their representatives as if Republican radio doesn’t exist. Most concerned citizens and activists are unaware of how much one radio station can trash their candidates, distort their values, negate their activism, and minimize their protests.

THERE IS NO WRITTEN RECORD OF REPUBLICAN RADIO: Until now there was no way to search, read, and analyze what Republican radio pumps out (see RECORD AND TRANSCRIBE TALK RADIO). Republican politicians and candidates make regular appearances on Republican radio and can say just about anything without fear of fact-checking.

DON'T LET REPUBLICAN RADIO LIE ABOUT YOUR CANDIDATES AND ISSUES

As elections approach, friendly interviews with Republican candidates, their aides, and think tank-sponsored guests become more common on Republican radio. They can say just about anything they want because Democrats and liberals don’t listen.

Talk radio is free advertising for the Republican Party and they feel comfortable saying things they wouldn’t on other media. Their radio appearances will provide more examples of ignorance, bigotry, and lies, which can be useful in advertising, letters to the editor, and debates.

Improvements in transcription software make it possible to get a good idea of what they’re saying and how often they’re saying it, without the pain of actually listening to it.

With a basic text application the transcriptions can be searched for points of interest. When the name of a Democratic candidate appears it is likely that she is being lied about and attacked with direction from local or national GOP-friendly think tanks.

Original recordings can be used for verification.

What are are they saying about:

Your representatives and candidates?
Global warming?
Health care?
War?
Energy policy?
Environmental regulation?
Racism?
Sexism?
Wall street regulation?
Net neutrality?
Censorship?
Immigration?
Abortion?
Supreme court candidates?
Drug policy?
Media reform?
Election reform?
Voter suppression?
Gun control?
Public education?
Unions?
Teachers?
You?

REPUBLICAN RADIO MYTHS

MYTH: Republican radio’s primary purpose is to sell product for advertisers.

The advertising pays rent and salaries. Republican radio spreads disinformation and outrage to convince Americans to hate other Americans and to act and vote against their own best interests.

Republican radio’s more profitable purpose is to sell:

war
global warming denial
deregulation- wall street, banking, environmental, media, etc.
tax breaks for the 1%
privatization of the commons and the public sector
excuses, rationalizations, distortions, diversions
sycophant Republican politicians
unqualified Republican judges
lies and distortions used to swiftboat Democrats and liberals, short circuit democracy, and obstruct reforms

MYTH: Republican radio's popularity and success is market-based. Liberal radio fails because no one listens to it and it can’t compete.

When Ronald Reagan got rid of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987, Republicans bought up hundreds of radio stations and subsidizied talkers like Rush Limbaugh. The Fairness Doctrine would have prevented the levels of unchallenged lying and distortion used so successfully today to create alternative realities and made-to-order constituencies.

One of Republican radio’s early successes was the media deregulation that allowed consolidation of Republican radio ownership to fewer companies/owners.

Liberal radio talkers have shown they can compete on an even playing field and even beat the main Republican talkers. That is why the Republican radio monopoly controls most of the loudest radio stations and works hard to limit direct competition by liberal talkers. Republican radio can’t handle the truth.

The argument that 95% of the people who would listen to talk radio prefer the hate and disinformation that the Republican radio monopoly is using to destroy American democracy is an insult to Americans.

What if companies were encouraged to let employees take election day or part of the day off by working extra time before or after, or some other way of accumulating time credit?

It would be easier for some kinds of employers than others, and there will be Republican employers who wouldn’t go for it, but it might increase participation in elections.

How can participating employers be encouraged? How could employees be encouraged to participate?

Maybe a public listing of employers who participate would be good PR for them.

Is there a way to trick Republican media into publicizing it with a predictably negative reaction?

Any ideas?

It is now possible to preschedule the recording of multiple talk radio streams at once and transcribe them with accuracy that will allow searches for key content and patterns.

The great Limbaugh boycott has made talk radio more costly for the Right but it is still practically free nationwide advertising for the GOP, ALEC, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Kochs.

Talk radio is the Right's most important political advantage because it can't be read or searched.  It is an invisible weapon. Analyzing politics without factoring RW radio has been a disaster for Democrats and liberals.

Now it's possible to monitor the radio propaganda in the state or national discourse without actually hanging by the radio.

A Mac running Snow Leopard OS or later and about $200 -$250 in software will enable a volunteer in every state democratic headquarters to search transcripts at the end of the day or week to know what's being aimed at Democrats from those think tanks mouthpieces.

My previous diary demonstrated how Wisconsin governor Scott Walker and his staff depended on talk radio in 2010.

It's happening in every state, free and without consequence for Republicans. You can buy a lot of TV ads with that Koch money, but to sell big lies you have to, as George Bush said, "keep repeating things over and over and over again, for the truth to sink in. You gotta catapult the propaganda."

SOFTWARE

Here's what I found out with the software. This is just for Mac and I didn't keep looking much after I found these two elements, which I'm still learning.

Snowtape is a simple app for about $30 that allows you to schedule your computer to simultaneously record multiple radio streams at the same time. Snowtape can separate ads from other content to some extent. There are a few tricks involved that I will explain below.

I got Macspeech Scribe for my slightly outdated 2011 Mac. It costs about $150 and allows you to train up to six voice profiles. Vocabulary can also be trained for better accuracy with particular names, organizations, and issues and words can be added or deleted. Note: Macspeech Scribe does not work on the new Mac Mavericks OS.

Dragon Dictate costs about $200 and may be the only option for the new Mac OS. I believe they also have a PC version. Dragon Dictate allows more voice profiles than Macspeech Scribe and may be better overall.

Most talk shows include guests, other staff voices, and ad voices, so it's a bit mixed up. And you have to actually enunciate punctuation so Macspeech runs all sentences together. Faster talkers who run words together are harder to get right. And it will make guesses that make no sense. It ain't perfect but training helps.

Don't spend the money if you're expecting error free transcription. Slow clear speech with no background noise provides good results but there are other factors. Here's an example from earlier this week from odious Wisconsin talker Vicki McKenna. The voice profile got minimal training and she slurs and talks fast a lot:

can you believe this. Not the Soros funded democracy alliance to buy into the democracy alliance you need to pay $250,000 and then pay $25,000 every single year democracy will I answer a bunch of billionaires who get together and they find various different left-wing dark money groups and yet you've got the same people who claim that it's okay for the John Doe to go forward because we're worried about dark money nevermind again this whole problem with the constitute should the same people who are reading me millions of dollars in dark money they don't want the other side to have dark money dark money money just means money that is not disclosed the Milwaukee County Board overrode Tracy believes the top of the other referendum that it is the move to ammend referendum the County Board at the past of dark money groups like democracy alliance and the Center for media and democracy and in the liberty tree alliance and a whole host of other anonymously funded left-wing organizations under the Soros umbrella overrode a Belize beat so on a advisory referendum to amend the First Amendment to make it illegal to speak to effect political change if your company why because
The transcriptions are more useful for identifying patterns and points of interest for further study with the original recordings. When they use words and phrases like Clinton, or Walker, 'minimum wage' or 'Move To Amend' (yes they're talking about it), the context is clear.

If there are more than 6 talkers to transcribe some may have similar voices and styles so the same profile might be used for more than one talker. It may be possible to export/share trained voice profiles- that could save some time and trouble. They do show up as files and can be deleted and replaced in Macspeech.

Modern Macs that can run Mavericks OS can load a free transcription software from Apple. I don't think it's trainable but it might work adequately for some talkers.

HOW TO RECORD AND TRANSCRIBE RADIO STREAMS

In the near future I hope to explain this process and improvements at a yet to be published site (probably the blip.org - for the big lie project).

Here's a list, with links, of top talk radio shows: Top Talk Radio

There are a few tricks to getting the right stream that Snowtape can record and into a sound file Macspeech can use.

Many radio stations seem to channel through services like Iheart Radio, that Swnowtape can't record for some reason someone else may be able to explain. There may be better ways but I do this:

TO RECORD

1) Plug the call letters of the station into the Radio Locator and search (that also give signal coverage map).

2) Ciick on the stream they give and that should open iTunes.

3) In iTunes click on Get Info in the File menu and then click on Edit URL. Copy that URL.

4) Open Snowtape, and it should show up in the field if you click on Import URL under the File menu. Then Snowtape can record it.

TO TRANSCRIBE

1) In Snowtape Preferences go to Exporting and choose the AAC format.

2) Select files to translate and in the Snowtape Action menu choose Export to iTunes. Those files will be placed in a Snowtape file as M4A files that Macspeech can use.

3) Then drag them from iTunes to your RW TALK RADIO SUCKS or REPUBLICANS LIE folder in Finder and you then should be able to open them with Macspeech, which apparently only works with M4A and AAC files.

I imagine there are easier ways. Even better, maybe someone could come up with a fully automated easy-to-use software combo for all those Democratic Party election headquarters!

There is also software called Amazing Slow Downer that may help slow the faster talkers down for greater accuracy although I'm not yet sure how much it helps because Macspeech may automatically do the same or similar. I have to experiment some more.

And if you want to convert audio files to various formats I found Switch.

ELECTION 2014

The planet can't afford 2 more years of obstruction. We waste too much time with talk radio manufactured distractions like Benghazi. GOP/ALEC think tanks are already using those giant megaphones to sell their candidates and attack and lie about their Democratic opponents.

Every important election and issue will be distorted and lied about regularly from those radio stations until November 2014. Your candidates will be attacked. Your issues will be distorted. Your protests and fellow protestors will be demonized. RW radio will effect Democratic primaries to favor blue dogs, or whoever will support that bloody KXL pipeline, if advantageous for them.

Every state Democratic headquarters, every Democratic candidate, and every progressive organization with stakes in the 2014 election could spend a few hundred bucks and volunteer hours to finally end this major Republican advantage.

Take the evidence to the local/state/national media so they will know where the lies are coming from. Let the media and the politicians who repeat and give credibility to the talking points know where it's coming from, and that the screaming outraged callers and writers are illegitimate made-to-order billionaire constituencies full of talk radio crap.

When the town hall meetings or the vote recounts are overrun by dittohead/ teabaggers yelling the same talking points it is important to publicize where they got their marching orders. Media will be less likely to credit them as 'popular sentiment'.

How many 2014 elections will be won by those 450 carnival barkers sitting behind call screeners in the loudest radio stations in the country? How many volunteer hours and small donations will they negate because liberals ignore them? How much more anti-democratic lunacy will they enable with their unchallenged repetition?

COPYRIGHT PROBLEMS?

I don't know what the copyright limitations are relative to a public display of the word soup spewing from all those stations but if the Democratic Party kept it in house that shouldn't be a problem- right?

Can all that word soup be published on line in some form so that it can be searched by anyone? Can the recorded files be made available online for public reference? How accurate do the transcripts have to be to constitute copyright infringement?

Any copyright lawyers out there?

The Gov. Walker emails provide numerous examples of how Walker and his staff used Wisconsin talk radio to get into the Governor's mansion.

Most of the ten examples below show Walker and staff feeding talking points to talk show hosts, prompting them, and coaching them. At one point staff listens to a favorite talk show tool, Charlie Sykes, to see if Sykes is helping them.

There were a number of references in the emails to Wisconsin right wing radio talkers including Sykes and Mark Belling in Milwaukee and Vicki McKenna and Mitch Henck in Madison on Limbaugh station AM 1310 WIBA.

With Walker now in Madison I imagine WIBA plays a larger role than it would when these emails were written.

Sykes seemed to be Walker’s go-to carnival barker. Along with his radio work for 620 WTMJ, Sykes co-publishes a blog with ALEC ‘alum’ and stink tank (MacIver Institute) co-founder Brian Fraley. Walker also has an ALEC background.

During the day WTMJ can be heard in the Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, Chicago area ( http://www.radio-locator.com/... ). WTMJ broadcasts Wisconsin University Badgers, Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Milwaukee Brewers games.  In Madison, WIBA also pays the University of Wisconsin to broadcast Badger sports.

Republican politicians and ALEC/GOP think tanks feed and manage hundreds of radio talkers nationally, selling ALEC legislation and obstructing progressive legislation at little cost.  The radio hosts are presented in our communities as concerned citizens enjoying their individual free speech rights on the public airwaves, broadcasting from radio stations licensed to operate in the public interest.

After the emails I have four suggestions for challenging the Republican talk radio advantage before the 2014 elections.

Note: The originals are all mixed up from repeated inclusion in replies and forwarding. I tried to order them by date. I reordered some email headings and cut some redundancies to make the emails more readable. The six digit numbers are page numbers. My notes within the quotes are in parentheses. My bold. If you want to search the Walker emails for the examples I use I suggest referencing material in the block quotes, or unique fragments, like dates, that wouldn't have been changed.

I hope Wisconsinites will weigh in with context and corrections.

If the definition of insane is doing the same thing and expecting different results then I'd say Democrats are insane.

And most analysis of the Democratic loss in Florida is useless.

Alex Sink lost by less than 2%.

How much did the luxury of ignoring right wing radio, same as always, cost in votes?

5%? 10%? 20%?

And RW radio is practically free for the GOP, ALEC, and the Kochs.

All the other factors are normal for both parties- print, tv, internet, money, get out the vote, tactics, etc. Same as always, we can analyze the results of this election for weeks as to relative wins and fails and comparisons of those factors and whether Sink was progressive or smart or aggressive enough. But most of it is useless because the left ignores the talk radio advantage.

I'll bet a poll of republican voters in this election would likely show 90% of them with a maximum of 2 degrees of separation from the talk radio gods, their myths, their distortions, and their lies. I've never seen that polled.

Most or all pro-Jolly and anti-Sink advertisements were probably based on or reinforced by the unchallenged groundwork repetition done by months and years of talk radio. They probably used the same old talking points and memes.

Did democrats monitor the main RW stations and their blowhards in Florida? That could be much easier now with modern transcription software such as that available for free with the new Mac OS.

Did anyone talk back or protest when they attacked and lied about Alex Sink and the issues? The Walker emails have clear examples of how useful talk radio is to GOP candidates.

And how many state-funded Florida colleges nullified the activism of their students, faculty, and alumni in support of Sink by renting their sports team logos to those stations and their blowhards? How can that be acceptable to Democrats in Florida?

Most of the analysis is a trivial waste of time if dems and progressives continue to ignore one of the biggest factors in modern politics.

There is no angle progressives can pursue that can make more of a difference in the November 2014 elections.

It's time for something completely different.

Sink lost by about 2%. How much was the talk radio advantage worth?
