I read fan fiction while eating breakfast. I eat breakfast about an hour to an hour and a half after getting up, so that gives me time to scan the news headlines, read the [now] New Day Cafe and any other DK stories I can cram into that interim before my cereal bowl sings that siren song.
But, Susan, I can hear you thinking, why read on the computer when you have perfectly good library books waiting for you right over there? Good question and the answer is so I don’t drip milk, Cherrios and blueberries on the people’s pages.
My first choice of fan fic is Stargate SG:1. That was my favorite TV show for 10 years before it was cancelled and fan fiction keeps the team going through the gate indefinitely. Some fan fic writers are professional caliber and some are so bad that one or two paragraphs are enough to make one shout Next! Most are somewhere in between. Occasionally an author will take the opportunity to right some wrongs: in the TV show NCIS, team leader Gibbs used to hit his subordinate Tony regularly (a swat to the head) and no one seemed to take offense. In RL, hopefully Gibbs would have been first reprimanded, then if he didn’t stop, fired. There is fan fic where Gibbs gets in trouble for this heinous behavior.
And there is crossover fiction, where SG:1 runs into the crew of Serenity and The Doctor just happens to drop in. Or Vala Mal Doran from SG:1 (played by Claudia Black) runs into Aeryn Sun from Farscape (played by Claudia Black) and The Doctor drops in. Or Dutch from Killjoys (played by Hannah John-Kamen) stumbles across Ornela (played by Hannah John-Kamen) from GoT and look! it’s The Doctor.
Almost all of the fan fiction I read is science fiction and almost all of that has a prominent character who is a woman warrior of some kind; sometimes she is a scientist or other intellectual who uses her education and intellect in service to truth, justice and the better way.
What about you? Do you read fan fiction? What do you like? What do you recommend?
As always, this is an open thread.
All are welcome to join the fun, the silliness, the conversations. If you don’t know...just ask! Some things really do require a bit of explanation.
There will be a few surprises along the way, all good ones, we hope.
We are here to keep building the Daily Kos Community.
We post Mon-Sat at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. On Sunday we go to the CUA posting to show support for all the work for November’s elections. Please to join us there, as well.
Pie fights will be met with outrageous ridicule and insults. Trolls will be incinerated and served at the next group BBQ. As briquettes.
