I have a bunch of discombobulated thoughts chasing around in my head, so I figured I’d share them with you all.
How is it November 1st already? Wasn’t it just January? It’s weird, because each week feels like it’s a month long, but the year seems to have flown by. Yes, I realize this makes no sense.
My middle niece applied and was accepted to Liberty University. Yes, that Liberty University. I know at least part of the reason is that her stepfather has said he’ll pay for her tuition if she goes there, but not if she goes to a secular school, but ugh. Her grades are good enough to get scholarships, if she applies. I realize she is religious/spiritual, but she’s never been far-right evangelical, and I fear what the college will do her.
We’ve stalled on the kitchen renovations at the moment because we’ve been having issues with the septic system, and the company that came and checked it out last week didn’t actually fix the issue, and they’ve not returned calls.
My paternal grandmother is not doing well. Her 93rd birthday is the 25th of this month, if she makes it that long. I visited with her on Saturday; she’s still got her mental faculties, but talking is difficult for her and she’s basically bedridden. Hospice started visiting last week to help my aunt & uncle take care of her. It’s rough; pretty much any movement seems to cause her pain, and she’s not eating or drinking much. Tomorrow is the anniversary of both my maternal grandfather’s and my husband’s grandmother’s death. So it’s already a fraught time mentally, and I’m hoping tomorrow doesn’t claim my last grandparent.
Also, there’s a state/local election coming up, and I feel out of touch with politics for the first time in a while. I used to listen to local news during my commute, but since we moved, my commute is short enough that most of the time, I just listen to the radio (I don’t need traffic reports anymore). Most races I have no problem voting straight down the Democratic line, but for some of the local races, no party is listed (e.g. school board).
As the holidays are fast approaching, I encourage you to check out the Kos Katalogue — Kossacks selling goods and services, and many take custom orders. But custom orders take time, so don’t wait till the last second.
Tangentially related, many people are going to be struggling this holiday season, so be sure to check out the links at the bottom of belinda’s diary yesterday for California Fire relief & Puerto Rico/USVI Hurricane relief.
So, what random thoughts are running through your heads today, if you care to share?
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
As always, this is an open thread and nothing is off topic. What do you want to kibitz about tonight?
