I find it strange that animal rights advocates and vegans/vegetarians seem so far and few between on Daily Kos. Or at least, I find it strange that there is so little attention paid to animal issues. Most of the time, diaries about food revolve around human health, human economy, human workers' rights, and so forth.
My surprise at this dearth of attention is due in large part to the fact that animal welfare is in all ways a deep expression of core progressive values. Some of these include: appreciating the unnecessary suffering of others, and working to alleviate that suffering; protecting the economically powerless; protecting "the commons" from private usurpation (in this case, preserving biodiversity and stemming global warming, for just a few examples); etc.
