When watching the transition yesterday, I was struck by the stark contrast between President Obama and now President Trump. On one side you had a guy who looked, spoke and acted like some bizarre mixture between an aging Las Vegas entertainer and a Mafia Don from the 1980s. You know, the type of guy that could wear the most expensive suits and still look cheap.
And then there was President Obama, a genuine human being who exuded class and showed grace, even though it must have been incredibly difficult for him to hand the reigns of power in Washington to an uncouth, dishonest hack who basically launched his political career by vomiting up a seemingly never-ending conspiracy theory about President Obama’s place of birth. And I can’t even imagine how hard it must have been for Michelle Obama to endure the whole process and show grace while the guy who used racist conspiracy theory attacks on the man she loves was being sworn in to the presidency.
Although Trump did show grace towards Obama throughout much of the day, the contrast between President Obama and the guy who wants to be king could not have been starker. Just about the only thing I enjoyed watching yesterday were the moments when footage included the Obamas. When President Obama gave his speech before flying off to a well-deserved vacation in Palm Springs, it felt like a dark cloud had descended over Washington. I know that many of you felt the same, so I would like to share my experience today with you:
Today, as I watched the footage of The Women's March on Washington and the many large marches throughout the nation, my spirits were lifted. Thank you, you wonderful women. It is absolutely delightful to see more people marching on the streets of Washington today than yesterday, during the inauguration of Trump. I will always stand with you in guarding your rights and dignity. It is absolutely fantastic to see so very many of you coming out to protect our democracy and fight for human decency!
My spirits were lifted again when I came across an article about Barack and Michelle Obama launching a video in which they describe what they will be doing now that they are private citizens again. What they’re planning sounds really constructive and I especially like how they are asking us for input and participation. The video already has over 2.5 million views, despite being less than a day old. I’m definitely on board, since I will likely consider Obama my president until we get another president, one who actually receives a majority, or at least a plurality, of the votes.
In writing this, in addition to needing an outlet for the deep emotions that I have been going through during the last couple of days, I hope that sharing these positive developments today will be uplifting to some of you. We should remember that there are many fantastic human beings in America, that Donald Trump received nearly 3 million less votes than Hillary Clinton. Barack and Michelle Obama will also still be with us, as a team, as the wonderful couple that they are. And wow, there sure are a lot of fantastic women marching through the streets of our nation today.
There is hope.
