In case you haven’t heard, the US is in for a rare treat on August 21, when a total solar eclipse will pass from Oregon across the country and exit near South Carolina. The best views will come in the Midwest around midday, with northeast Kansas being ground zero.
This afternoon, an event center in Volland Kansas, a near-ghost town in the Flint Hills, a K-State professor gave a fabulous overview of the best way to experience a total solar eclipse to a standing-room-only crowd. Started with chairs for 100, added 15-20 more, and still folks were standing around the wall and sitting on the floor.
Did my heart good to see that even in deep-red rural Kansas, interest in science makes people drive for miles and cram into a restored 19th-century general store to discuss this (for most of us) once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Anybody else getting eclipse fever?
