Remember this juicy and endlessly re-watchable episode from 2012? Turdblossom got a frantic case of the vapors and his boxers got all scrunched up — on air! He just couldn’t accept that Ohio, where he’d dropped other people’s dimes in huge amounts, was slipping away.
I honestly do believe that Rove's denial was based on a sincere and deep seeded belief in the data... The only problem is that he forgot that the data he believed in was cherry picked, massaged and stove piped to agree with the fondest wishes of rich donors to his PAC, and the unrealistic fanatasies of window licking true believers in the "base".
Rove was conned by his own con. Delicious. Sort of a precursor of how Trump’s short con has taken over the GOP long con… but I digress...
What was almost as delicious, but also equally disturbing, was the reaction of the inside-the-bubble echo chamber of Talk-Radio and RW blogs. These true believers absolutely lost their shit.
Remember the shots of crowds of crying supporters on election night? These people, and the mouth breather callers on the AM dial in the next few days, and the misspellers on the internet tubes over the next few months, actually all held as a matter of certifiable rock solid sure-bet that Mittens Romney would win back the "White' House from the Kenyan Muslim Neeeee-gro Interloper.
The fascinating thing to me was ... how on Earth could they feel that way? Anyone who looked at the polls and saw the Electoral College stacking up could see that Romney had absolutely no path to a win…
But, you see, the right is no longer tied in any way to a rational appreciation of facts.
As things stand now in 2016 they have a candidate with massive negatives in every single demographic group n where he needs to garner increased support. Blacks hate him. They don't just prefer Hillary, they actively hate him. Hispanics hate him. I wonder why? Women hate him. People under 40 hate him. Independents hate him. Those are facts.
Yet you see Trumpsuckers on all the discussion forums and hear them on AM radio, not just arguing in support of his candidacy, but absolutely CONVINCED he is going to somehow win... just as he is bleeding away even from his own base.
They can feel this way because they inhabit a bubble zone where they no longer have to examine prejudices and presuppositions and risk painful cognitive dissonance. Bully for them.
As things stand now, there may well be a massive flood of Schadenfreude possibilities for the left on election day…
But some sobering thoughts: what if the levy breaks early?
Its my opinion that the failure of Trump may be of such a mammoth and obvious scale and severity taht it may well pierce the bubble reality. There is loads of time between now and November, and I think from all evidence that Trump's arc of flailing idiocy and pathology may not have even started approaching nadir.
What happens if the despair comes early?
In Trump supporters we do not see balance, reflection, forethought, or restraint.
If it slowly starts dawning on them that Trump can not and will not deliver, what horrors may await us this summer?
The sleep of reason breeds monsters, as Wollstonecraft-Shelley put it.
What strange beasts, their time come round at last, shamble towards Cleveland to be born?
