Across the country today and through this week, Americans are participating in more than 100 “tax day” rallies. By and large, these rallies are being organized by activists with the new grassroots organization US Uncut, with an assist from MoveOn.org and USAction, which is the group I work for.
Some of these rallies are small, some are large, some are teach-ins, some are press conferences. What they have in common is that they connect Republican efforts to cut essential services at the state and local level with the fact that we are losing a trillion dollars or more in potential revenue because of corporate tax loopholes.
I’m going to focus on one event – a press conference hosted by USAction affiliate New Jersey Citizen Action in Newark – because Jeff Blum, my executive director at USAction spoke there and his comments offer us a teachable moment. Jeff presents a narrative -- a way to explain our vision for talking about our economy, our choices and challenges and the role of government in the America of today and tomorrow.
