I have sent this to a few papers but recieved no interest in printing it. I think it is important. Thoughts?
Let's Make Sure
Almost every week now we hear that the US military has killed Iraqis (some of them women and children) during a "precision" air strike on a "suspected safehouse" filled with "suspected insurgents," or "suspected terrorists," or "suspected remnants of Hussein's regime." Just a week or so back, we bombed a house and killed 14 Iraqis. In all of these attacks, the military said the house held "suspected terrorists." But a doctor at the local hospital said women and children were killed, and a local official said the bomb hit a civilian area.
A few weeks before, the Associated Press ran this story: "The U.S. military launched its third airstrike in a week Friday in Fallujah, using precision weapons to destroy a suspected safehouse for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's terror network. U.S. officials estimated there were 20-25 Iraqi casualties." The headlines this week repeated the same news, with the AP actually showing a man carrying his young, teenaged son's wounded body--one of the precise victims of our precision bombing. In this attack, our precision bomb killed eight and wounded 15, including women and children.
There is so much wrong with these bombings, and the justifications for them, that it's hard to know where to start.
