Shortly after the sweep in the 2008 election I blogged on another site about the very real possibility that the Republican Party was dangerously close to becoming part of history (much like the Dixiecrat, Whig, and Bull Moose Parties before it). At the time I was referring mostly just to the elections. For the time being the Republican Party has been regulated to being a purely southern entity. Even then there are Democratic strongholds at the state and local levels (Arkansas is one example where the top offices are held by Democrats and so to is their senate and house).
We have seen each party in the past be relegated (changed from regulated with thanks due to HamdenRice) to different regions of the country and it became apparent that the only way to get back to the national spotlight was to open their tent (so to speak) to those of differing views in order to gain more voters.
Two years ago I believed that the Republican Party would make the move to the more moderate side of the party in an effort to stay national.
I have been, apparently, proven wrong.
