Now class, let's review Constitutional America, the mythic country we all believe in. In that country, the nation's leaders go to war reluctantly but marshal the people's support behind the wars they do fight. In that country, all citizens feel the pain and understand the seriousness of war, and so the soldiers' sacrifices are felt by the society as a whole. In that country, people scrimp and save to finance and support those wars that are felt to be just. In that country, American soldiers are shocked when they encounter torture because our country does not use those barbaric practices, because we hold ourselves to a higher standard, embodied in the Geneva Conventions and the Constitution.
