From time to time, the President's Press Office puts out a list of what the White House claims he is reading. And from various interviews with the press, statements come out that give some idea of what the president says he is doing in the reading area.
Given the importance of the No Child Left Behind Act as emphasized by the Bush Administration, I thought it would be useful to look at what the President says his reading program is, and see if it has led to any improvement in his executive performance.
During the day, of course, it is well known that W. likes to have policy issues boiled down to one page. So today's focus is on his "after-work" reading program. See more below the fold.

The familiar recruiting poster tells all and sundry that the Marines are looking for a few good men. But you have to really dig through the records of the military justice system to find out that the Leathernecks have another historic watermark that they are a lot less willing to tout in recruiting literature. To wit, a military tribunal, on appeal, has officially upheld the verdict that a USMC Lance Corporal was as guilty as Benedict Arnold of treason, only this time in the context of the war on drugs.
For those who find this hard to believe, right away I will give the citation. United States v. Enrique Barrazamartinez, Lance Corporal, USMC, appellant, US Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, Case No. 02-0865, Criminal appeal No. 200101575. Continue below the fold.

America's failed policies toward Lebanon and the Middle East did not start rotting just during the current Bush Administration. In yesterday's post, I noted that the book "Ropes of Sand: America's Failure in the Middle East," by Wilbur Crane Eveland, (W. Norton, NY; 1980) recounts a very scathing analysis of how US policymakers--including John Foster Dulles and Allan Dulles--failed to act on the recommendations that the real problem was not fighting Communist "influence" (which was virtually non-existent until meddling created opportunities for Russia) but addressing the issue of Palestine and Israel and the refugees.
This led to a nuclear war scare for Republican pres Eisenhower in the mid-1950's. More below the fold.

One of the talking points you will not hear discussed among "Neocons on the air" is that the groundwork for the current pus-filled diplomacy in Lebanon was laid down during the Eisenhower Administration.
Before the talking heads explode, it is fair to point out that Woodrow Wilson gave Lebanon a taste of the ficklness of US foreign policy by raising the hopes of small countries in actual democracy--and then failing to live up to the promise.
Yet the active seeds of the present dissention stretch back to a framework hastily erected during the Eisenhower years in the mid-1950's. Read some authoratitive quotes below the fold:

GE/NBC with Brian Williams did two things tonight of interest to the Kos community. We'll take the second item first: GE/NBC/BW invited viewers to e-mail them, and aired a couple of e-mails--quite possibly a move to try to appeal to the wired set.
But ahead of that, predictably, Brian Williams carried a story on Ned Lamont's victory over Joe Lieberman. Only the story was skewed with a megadose of Republican spin--featuring dominant interpretation by--not Democrats--but republican strategist Grover Norquist. But, for journalism, it was not just falling prey to the republican spin--but the gross incompetence of news researchers by not at least putting in a warning label in the newscrawl (jump)

Mr. Robert Fisk's insights from 30 years of reporting in the Middle East are well worth reading in full, in his book "The Great War for Civilisation."
But two of them have left a real impression on me, which I hope I can share a bit of without undercutting anyone's desire to read the entire book.
It's two main points, but just long enough to require going over the jump.

The White House announced its plans for the 4th of July holiday--another photo-op with soldiers and flags in the background at Ft. Bragg, NC--home of the 82nd Airborne and and Special Operations.
But the staff support on the choice of location must have been a little weak--maybe Tony Snow's new staff hasn't learned to "Google-search" enough about their photo-ops as yet.
So, below the fold, there is a nice hard-ball question that the main-stream media (MSM) could be asking, which would make a nice return volley to the Repub assault on the New York Times, and by extension, to try to intimidate the press in general. Let's see if it comes up in the press gaggle (continued)

Today I witnessed one of the more depressing public hearings I have ever attended. The topic was huge: Emergency preparedness, particularly in the Northern New Jersey region. One of the main issues: what happens in the event that New York City has to be evacuated? What are the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the state and local authorities going to do when New York City (2005 population estimate=19,254,630 people, acc. to US Census Bureau) find themselves in a situation where the Big Apple has to be evacuated?
For a sense of scale, that means that about 6.5 percent of the entire population of the US would have to move out smartly on short notice (more below the fold).

Recent news reports have as many as 250,000 Turkish troops massing near Turkey's border with Iraq. But there seems to be little real analysis in commercial media as to what this really means.
Herewith, a quick round-up of some past articles, to try to shed some light on this development.
Kurdish media seem curiously blase about the news of the build up. A Kurdish news website indicates the usual fears of a major incursion are present, but not really creating a sense of immediate emergency.

The corporate media has moved the focus off of Iran somewhat, despite the warning by investigative reporter Sy Hersh that US troops have already been on the ground in Iran for a year. So the average news junkie is reduced to looking for clues along probable lines of development.
If you look at open-source literature, available to anyone, you will be led to some disturbing conclusions. Mainly, that if a conflict is already in progress, the average news consumer is quite unaware of the probable costs.
Newspaper readers have a general sense that the US plan is to bomb their way to "success." But let us examine what may be required in the way of "grunts," actual infantry.

There is of course increasing pressure on Iran by the US over alleged concern about Iran's purported nuclear development program, which Iran maintains is peaceful for energy development and the US professes concern over military development. The curious development to follow in this saga is how an evangelical missionary group finds itself caught up in the nuclear politics in the struggles between the nation-states.
The group in question is The New Tribes Mission, of Sanford, Florida, a non-profit which aims to bring the Christian evangelical message to all 3,000 or so indigeneous tribes in the world (Continued).

The author of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire remains surprisingly relevant today. The scholar was of course examining history for the causes of the decline of the once-great people. Here is one passage (p. 365) worth quoting, in light of current events:
But its fall (The Empire's) was announced by a clearer omen than the flight of vultures. The Roman goverment appeared every day less formidable to its enemies, more odious and oppressive to its subjects. The taxes were multiplied with the public distress, economy was neglected in proportion as it became necessary, and the injustice of the rich shifted the unequal burden from themselves to the people, whom they defrauded of their indulgences that might sometimes have alleviated their misery."
