Lieberman's defection from the Democratic mainstream has made his betrayal, which had been implicit for years, glaringly explicit. Such a blatant betrayal gives the Democratic Party a golden opportunity to broaden its appeal to the independent and even the conservative voter. The mechanism for this conversion rests in the psychology of the "ingroup."
A recent paper by Haidt and Graham, professors at The University of Virgina, proposed that there are five "psychological systems" that provide the foundations for the world's many moralities. These systems are: caring, reciprocity, ingroup, hierarchy and purity. Taking an international sample (mostly from U.K. and U.S.A.), the researchers asked a stem question: "When you decide something is right or wrong, to what extent are the following considerations relevant to your thinking?"
