Presidential Primaries don’t often see a lot of endorsements in newspapers out in the New York area. Normally, the races are settled by this point, and there isn’t a lot of point to it. But this Tuesday matters, and here’s a list of newspaper endorsements in New York for Tuesday’s primary.
New York Times — Hillary Clinton
Hillary Clinton is the right choice for the Democrats to present a vision for America that is radically different from the one that leading Republican candidates offer — a vision in which middle-class Americans have a real shot at prosperity, women’s rights are enhanced, undocumented immigrants are given a chance at legitimacy, international alliances are nurtured and the country is kept safe.
New York Observer — Hillary Clinton
There is a single word that qualifies Hillary Clinton for the nomination: experience. Ms. Clinton may be the most uniquely qualified person to run for the presidency in a generation. Her work as secretary of state gave her firsthand experience understanding complex foreign policy issues and dealing with allies and adversaries. Her service as New York’s junior senator demonstrated that she understood how to leverage federal agencies, pierce the byzantine budget process and find support from Republicans to secure essential funds for New York after 9-11. And her perspective gained as first lady—to say nothing of the bruising battle to reform health care—was invaluable. It is difficult to think of another candidate with such varied and valuable experience.
Newsday (Long Island) — Hillary Clinton
We have seen her in action for decades — as an active first lady; as an effective eight-year senator who delivered for New York, including billions in federal aid to rebuild New York City after 9/11; and in four years as secretary of state, when she played a critical role in levying crippling sanctions on Iran and in the killing of Osama bin Laden.
That experience on the world stage makes her the best choice to deal with its complicated troubles, especially terrorism, a newly belligerent Russia and an increasingly militaristic China.
Her long service and many scars from more than 30 years of political battles make Clinton a superb manager, with a knowledge of issues unmatched by any candidate.
Syracuse Post Standard — Hillary Clinton
We believe Clinton has the experience and political savvy for uncertain times. She's a proven leader on the world stage and especially in New York, where she served ably in the Senate and represented Upstate interests.
Clinton's long public life has been a help and hindrance. She expanded the role of first lady, ran for the Senate, pursued the presidency and served President Barack Obama as his secretary of state. The world is messy and complicated and so is her record _ a vote to go to war in Iraq that she now regrets, a fatal attack on diplomats in Libya, Syria in turmoil and an email controversy that won't go away.
Her missteps could be considered a liability -- or they could prove to be the ultimate lessons learned and never to be repeated. She knows what's at stake on the human and political level both here and abroad.
Glens Falls Post Star — Hillary Clinton
We have to pick from the candidates we have, and weigh their merits against each other. On the Democratic side, we have Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. We respect Sanders’ long advocacy for the less privileged. But Clinton is the more experienced and accomplished candidate, and she will make a better president.
Albany Times-Union — Hillary Clinton
For all the frequent consensus between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, they differ significantly on details, their approach to governing, and their experience. It’s those differences that give Mrs. Clinton the decisive edge in the Democratic primary.
All in all, it looks like an endorsement sweep for Hillary Clinton. And what’s even more impressive — the endorsements all had good things to say about both candidates. An embarrassment of riches, that’s what we have!
