Drug violence and mass killings are out of control in Mexico.
I would not want to go to Mexico for any reason.
If I lived there, I would want to get the hell out.
Are the people in Mexico concerned? I don't know. You tell me.
The people in the US States that border Mexico are freaking out.
I don't blame them one bit.
They read things like this monthly, weekly, and now DAILY:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/...
Ms Bautista's convoy was ambushed as she was returning from the opening of a regional fair on Saturday, officials say.
A woman official attacked after attending a civilian regional fair.
The attackers used assault rifles, grenades, a grenade launcher and a sniper rifle capable to hit through bullet-resistant materials.
They have sophisticated weaponry...
"In the ambush, they used concentrated fire from these types of weapons, forcing her [Ms Bautista] and her escort to crash into a trailer truck that they had pulled across the road," State Attorney General Jesus Montejano told Mexico's Milenio TV station.
They are trained and organized...and they all apparently got away too.
Two of Ms Bautista's bodyguards and two bystanders were killed in the attack. Most of the wounded were bystanders.
Collateral damage is of no concern to them. They will take out as many civilians as they have to to get the targeted official(s)...
The attack comes a day after seven people, including six police officers, died in a shoot-out with suspected gang hitmen in the city of Ciudad Juarez, on the border with the US.
Only a day earlier the same type of assault was perpetrated on Mexican police officers in a town RIGHT ON THE US BORDER. The AZ law was signed on Friday. Presumably this attack happened Friday night. Then another on Saturday. This is an all out war. And it's all happening a few feet from the US Border - with Mexico.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon has poured thousands of armed police and troops to wrest control from the powerful gangs.
Arizona just passed a new law. I wish them luck.
Punishing people in the US...including those fleeing from this madness...creating a flood of refugees into the United States, has so far been the only definitive governmental action on our side of the border. The question is: who really needs to be punished? The refugees? Anyone with brown skin? The companies who employ them? Anyone at all?
...or the Mexican Drug Gangs and their unwitting customers in the US?
Who and what stands at the heart of this darkness?
UPDATE: Proposal for a Solution
The heart of the matter are drugs themselves.
Specifically: Pot.
Therefore I propose that:
ALL AMERICANS AND CANADIANS STOP SMOKING POT FOR 1 YEAR.
In essence, this is a bi-national STRIKE.
By the testimony of pot-smokers themselves:
- Pot is a recreational drug, therefore it isn't abused. Quitting smoking for 1 year should be easy.
- Pot is not addictive, and therefore no one should have symptoms of withdrawal common to alcoholics, crack smokers, and cocaine and heroin users. Quitting smoking pot for one year should be a non issue for you.
If the government is going to drag their heels, it is up to us to lead the fight. Start with yourself. Lead the way and others will follow. All celebrities, musicians, and other popular personalities should take the first step...including Bill Maher and Snoop D. Announce that you have quit smoking pot for 1 Year starting today.
I quit drinking 13 years ago. That was hard. My guess is that quitting smoking pot, even for 1 week, will seem impossible to many of you. I challenge you to try it and at least see how far you can go.
Remember: pot is not addictive and is recreational.
Quitting should be effortless.
Prove that claim right. Quit.
Right now.
1 year.
And bankrupt the Drug Cartels.
