Congresswoman Mazie Keiko Hirono just announced that she's running for U.S. Senate in Hawai`i a few months ago. But her candidacy is already generating a lot of discussion. Please follow me below for some recent quotes. I'll also share a suggestion on how to help her campaign. Thanks.
U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye:
I've had a good working relationship with Mazie Hirono. In all the years she served the State of Hawai`i, I've had a good working relationship (with her). We get along, and so it would please me if we could continue that relationship.
Derrick DePledge, Politics Reporter, Honolulu Star-Advertiser:
Labor leaders and progressives are aligning behind Hirono.
Jeanine N. Atebara, CEO, Hawai`i Island YWCA:
Mazie, we are proud of your accomplishments. We are grateful for your commitment to improving the lives of women and children. We applaud you on how you have overcome the challenges that life has dealt you.
Stephanie Schriock, President, EMILY's List:
Mazie has been a tireless advocate for public schools and quality early childhood education. She has consistently championed the rights of women and families in Hawai`i. The EMILY's List community was proud to support her in the past, loves her fighting spirit, and looks forward to helping her make history as the Senate's first Asian-American woman.
Peter Ganaban, Business Manager, Laborers' International Local 368:
We are proud to stand behind Ms. Hirono. She has served Hawai`i well.
Laura Glading, President, Association of Professional Flight Attendants:
On every issue important to working families, Rep. Hirono is and has been in our corner. From protecting health and safety in the workplace to fighting for U.S.jobs, from health care reform to advocating for working families, Rep. Hirono has been outstanding.
As I've mentioned, progressive women never have an easy path to victory in big races, no matter their credentials. Notwithstanding the nice words quoted above, Mazie must endure a steady stream of putdowns from certain male pundits. Simply put, it's going to take a heavy investment in paid media to overcome that and ensure an accurate story of her campaign is told. In other words, she needs to raise a lot of money for TV and radio commercials. The good news is that modest contributions can go a long way in this effort, especially in the campaign's early stages. Campaign contributions, of any size, beget campaign contributions, of all sizes. So may I suggest, if you've made it this far in the diary, that you please think about contributing at least $5 to her campaign via my ActBlue page. Thank you for your consideration!
