RNC Chairman Reince Priebus (if that doesn't sound like a name from the 1 percent, I don't know what does) went on CNN's Sunday show
State of the Union and
said that his Republican Party wants to cut taxes for everyone, not just for the richest:
"Of course the party doesn’t favor the rich, but what the party does favor is reducing taxes on every single American out there," Priebus said on CNN’s "State of the Union." "Making sure Washington is focused then on job creation, on cutting spending, on reducing the size of government -- these are things that will spur the economy and these are things that are cornerstone to the Republican Party."
Really? The Republican Party wants to reduce taxes on every single American out there? Maybe Mr. Priebus should talk to his presidential candidates about that.
Gov. Rick Perry:
“We’re approaching nearly half of the United States population that doesn’t pay any income taxes,” he responded. “And I think one of the ways is to let everybody, as many people as possible, let me put it that way, to be able to be helping pay for the government that we have in this country.”
Rep. Michele Bachmann:
“Part of the problem is today, only 53% pay any federal income tax at all; 47% pay nothing.” She added, “We need to broaden the base so that everybody pays something, even if it’s a dollar.”
Gov. Mitt Romney:
“We want to make sure people do pay their fair share. Half the people in this country pay no income tax at all."
Current frontrunner Herman Cain's tax plan, meanwhile, would raise taxes (warning: long graph) on lower-income Americans while cutting them drastically for the rich.
So how can Chairman Priebus talk about how he wants to cut taxes on all Americans when his party's leading presidential candidates have all advocated for the opposite? And moreover, how can Priebus go on a cable talk show and peddle that without being called out on it?
