Earlier this afternoon, I came across this news story about an anonymous letter suggesting that a mother euthanize her autistic son. As much as I'd like to say I'm surprised about this, I can't. People talk this way about disabled people all the time.
The only thing I'm going to say in response is this: If those of you who are 'normal' or have 'normal children' ever end up in a situation where you have a disabled relative or become disabled yourself, I sure as hell hope society is much kinder to you than you are to us, especially when you tell us we should be shot or euthanized.
It's because of people like this that we have to work so much harder just to achieve a basic level of normalcy, whatever that is. I speak from experience here, because despite overcoming as much as I have to get here with two college degrees, there's a good chance I'll never land a decent job. Either way, I'm getting rather sick and tired of the blatant apathy that is too often on display here on the North American continent. Like one of the twitter posts said, 'Ignorance isn't bliss, it's just wrong.'
See you around,
Homer
