This is going well
After Donald Sterling, owner of the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers, was caught on tape making vile, racist remarks to his mistress, he received a
lifetime ban from the sport, which naturally led to his current rehabilitation tour. It's
not going well:
“What has he done?” Sterling said of Johnson (via CNN’s transcript). “Can you tell me? Big Magic Johnson, what has he done? He’s got AIDS. Did he do any business? Did he help anybody in South LA? … What kind of guy goes to every city and has sex with every girl and catches AIDS?”
And when told that Johnson doesn't have AIDS, he's HIV positive, Sterling quickly corrected his ugly, hateful words:
“What kind of guy goes to every city, has sex with every girl, then he goes and catches HIV,” he said. “Is that someone we want to respect and tell our kids about? I think he should be ashamed of himself. I think he should go into the background. And what does he do for black people? He hasn’t done anything.
... with more ugly, hateful words. And Sterling wasn't finished:
“I spend millions on giving away and helping minorities,” Sterling said. “Does he do that? That’s one problem I have. Jews, when they get successful, they will help their people. And some of the African-Americans — maybe I will get in trouble again — they don’t want to help anybody.”
On the bright side, Sterling did say he was really sorry about the racist crap he was spewing—the ones caught on tape that got him banned from basketball, not from this interview—and hopes everyone can forgive him. Good luck with that, Donald.
