Some people actually have escaped the Trump MAGA bubble. Not many. But some. Here’s one example:
Ex-MAGA: I believed that Michelle Obama was a man. That Barack Obama was part of the Muslim Brotherhood, and worst of all that the Sandy Hook in 2012 was completely fake and the parents were crisis actors.
All of these theories about Barack and Michelle Obama were very much rooted in racism. Sometimes I think Republicans develop conspiracy theories to deal with things that they just can’t accept. They’re in total denial and they rather just live in a fake reality than a real one. Which is why they deny the existence of climate change, and why something like January 6 happened. As we know, so many still live in the fake reality that the 2020 election was stolen.
So because I believed in all these theories, I believed that Democrats were totally evil and that Republicans were the good guys.
In 2012 I started knocking doors and making phone calls for Mitt Romney. Then in 2013 I campaigned for Ken Cuccinelli in the Virginia Governor’s race. After that I got an internship with the Republican Party headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. I was also the Vice President of the young Republican’s Club at my high school.
I was ALL IN.
In 2016 I knew that Donald Trump was running I just didn’t think much him. I voted for Ted Cruz in the primaries, which is nothing to be proud of, but at the time I thought he was more principled and more presidential. When Trump won the nomination I fell right in line, because when you think the other side is evil you can’t imagine voting for anyone but you’re own guy. So I happily voted for Trump.
I thought I had some unconventional wisdom that other women just didn’t. Yeah, I know.
Later in January of 2017 I went to attend Trump inauguration in DC as you saw. I was arrogant, I felt vindicated and I did not care that there were thousands of protestors there. I was there to support Trump.
So you might be wondering what was my breaking point? I wish there was one moment I could point to like “Yep, that’s it.” But truthfully it was a process of realizing what I already knew deep down, that he as unprincipled and unpresidential. One thing I will say is that once you realize he has a severe case of narcissism it helps explain a lot of his behavior. Then you’ll realize he should be absolutely nowhere near the oval office.
I’m not saying he isn’t responsible for his own behavior, he is. Once I came to the realization that he actually has a mental illness everything started to make sense
That’s when I got angry.
Because I realized the Repulican party had been coddeling him this whole time with zero push back and now he was a monster. I used to think that eventually he would do something so bad that it would be the final straw for the party, but that never came, and it still hasn’t come.
It also showed me the truth. That everything the party said they believed in was a lie. Every value was a lie. Because if you could stand by a man like Donald Trump you didn’t have values. You didn’t have principles period.
To me, it lifted the curtain on everything. Now I’ve dedicated the rest of my life to stopping Donald Trump and undoing all the damage that he’s caused. I joined the Democratic party after that and since then, I’ve never looked back. It’s the best decision I ever made.
Realizing that everything you thought as true, was a lie, was a tough realization, but a necessary one.
Yes, I have famiy and friends who still worship Trump and yes they have blocked me on Facebook. But that’s ok, because they don’t want to be reached. They don’t want to have a dialogue. They just want to live in a safe world of conspiray theories and denial.
For those who can be reached and want to be reached I think it’s important to maintain respect on both sides. [Too late for that!] Because just like how I thought Democrats were evil, and we were the good guys, my mind changed.
Their mind can change too. Now my advice to Trumpers is “get the hell out of there while you can.” You probably know deep down that he’s unfit, don’t be afraid to say it.
Lastly, turn off conservative talk radio.
This young woman is a rare exception to the rule. And we could use many more people like her, unfortunately they are in very short supply — and our nation is running out of time before the net election.
IMO There are three main important differences between the Left and Right.
-
The Self-delusion of believing everything that fits your own narrative is a human trait that requires character and maturity to defeat. Generally, the Left is willing and able to admit when they're wrong and when they've made a mistake. They will - at least sometimes - *change* and update their view when challenged. but for MAGAs it's a badge of honor to be stubborn, close-minded and arrogant when confronted with facts that refute their beliefs. They don't absorb and gather in new facts, they just dig in and resort to denial and diversion.
-
Deliberately lying or proposing false arguments is another character trait. For the most part, the Left is not deviously implementing secret plans to manipulate the nation for nefarious reasons. They are directly upfront about what they want and why. [I've been to the meetings, even behind closed doors and even on encrypted secure chats strategizing with lots of Democrats and they honestly don't have a "Secret Plan" to take over. They just don't want the nation to fall into Totalitarian Theocratic Fascism.] MAGAs on the other hand have lies at the center of nearly all their beliefs. "Mexicans are not Rapists and Migrants are not Criminals", "Fentynal is being smuggled into the Country by US citizens at regular ports of entry", "America is not a Christian Nation", "Yes, America was - at least partially - founded on Racism and Slavery and support for both was specifically written into the original Constitution (and none of the damage done by that has been repaired)", "Nobody does genital mutilation on children", "Nobody is indoctrinating anyone to become LGBTQ or anything that they are not", "Accurate American History and CRT doesn't make White people hate themselves", "DEI doesn't give jobs to the unqualified", "This is not a Christian Nation and never has been", "Nobody is aborting babies after birth" and "Trump was not the 'Greatest President Ever' - not while he bumbled COVID, said it would "just go away" and allowed 500,000 Americans to die unnecessarily, lost manufacturing and farm jobs due to his dumb tariffs, cut taxes for the rich which increased the deficit by over $1 Trillion, had the Saudis cut oil production which increased fuel costs, surrendered to the Taliban, betrayed and abandoned our allies the Kurds, allowed Iran to attack our soldiers without a response, allowed the country to shutdown and erupt into flames and the Capitol to be overrun, and had the worse jobs record overall since Herbert Hoover"
-
It's important to Listen to opposing views and have a well-rounded understanding of the issues from all sides. Yes, Inflation has been bad and driven prices up - but it was also a worldwide issue that has improved for the US faster than almost any other nation. America recovered from COVID at a record rate and part of the credit for that goes to Trump and his two stimulus bills. Unemployment went from 14% down to 6% on Trump's watch, so the recovery was already in progress before Biden came into office. Again generally, the Left is willing to see, hear and read the arguments from the other side of the view and learn from it. We understand and know the Great Replacement Theory, we understand and know the theories of "Stop the Steal" and why both of them are *wrong*. But MAGAs assume everything they disagree with is biased or a lie. They Don't Listen. Therefore they don't fully understand anything. They won't read the Durham report, the Hur report, the Mueller report, the Inspector General's report, the Senate Report on Russia interference, the J6 Report or any of the Indictments Against Trump. They believe he is somehow going to "WIN" even after he lost the popular vote in 2016 and 2020, he lost Congress in 2022, he lost the Trump University Case, the Trump Foundation Case, the Criminal Trump Business Taxes Case, 8 of his associates were convicted by Mueller - 5 of them for lying about being in communication with Russia - he lost TWO E. Jean Carrol Defamation Cases, the Trump Business Fraud Case, he lost 60 out of 61 Election cases, Giuliani lost his Election Defamation Case, Fox lost their Election Defamation Case to Dominion, Sydney Powell, Kenneth Chesebro and Jenna Ellis have all already pleaded guilty to the Fake Electors/Rico case. Despite all the evidence against him and his clear track record of failure, they still "believe" he's gonna "win" somehow. They don't gather the FACTS, everything they have is an opinion - usually based on a lie or a delusion. They won't read or understand what Biologists, Physicians and Psychiatrists say about Gender Dysphoria or what Scientists say about Climate Change. They dismiss all accredited media, experts and informed people as being "bribed" and "paid off" even though they can't identify who did that or where all this money is allegedly coming from. All of that is frankly, deep-seated paranoia and delusion. I do understand that this has happened because of a track record of the media being wrong and exaggerating, but there's a difference between that being the result of incompetence and sloppiness vs deliberate malice. Generally, Left media fails because of sloppiness (and they later make corrections), but Right media generally fails because of malice. The "evil corporate globalists" that MAGAs are concerned about are really the Murdochs, Mercers, Wilks, Peter Thiel, Sheldon Adelson, Patrick Byrne and others who fund Heritage, Fox, Dailywire, Dailymail and Breitbart, the people feeding them these deliberate false narratives on purpose. They use their media outlets to keep the MAGAs in constant outrage over ginned-up bullshit culture war issues so that they can manipulate the electorate into voting against their own interests, to cut regulations, cut more taxes and ultimately gut Social Security and Medicare so they can fill their own pockets higher and higher. The Left has problems, they make mistakes - but they don't have that problem.
Prove me wrong.
The woman in this video did absolutely fit that description, she even admits it.
No one argued her out of it, no one showed her a fact that suddenly made a light bulb go of in her head. She came to the conclusion by herself. She made up her own mind.
Similarly, former Homeland Security Chief of Staff Miles Taylor came to the same conclusion while working up close with Trump.
Taylor: Well if you really want to understand this man, you have to listen to his words and take them seriously. I’ll make a comparison here that fellow conservatives would cry “foul” about but it’s to Osama Bin Laden. And no Donald Trump is not Bin Laden, in some ways I think he’s doing more damage to American democracy, but I’m going to make the comparison because the reason we underestimated Osama Bin Laden [Clinton didn’t] when he was the leader of the al-Qaeda jihadist movement was because we didn’t take his word seriously.
If you go back Bin Laden was very clear about what he wanted to do, about his worldview, I mean he like wrote it out in long letters and speeches that forecast all of his plans.
Donald Trump has done the exact same thing.
He has talked about how he wants to run a second administration as a retributive president, that he wants to get revenge against his enemies, that he wants to use the powers of government to go after his political enemies. He means it. You need to take him seriously, whether you’re MAGA or whether you’re a Progressive, please take the man seriously. That’s what he wants to do, he would like to come in and systematically rewire Federal departments and agencies to act on his behalf to advance his personal self-interest and to get retribution against his enemies. If you think it’s more complicated than that you don’t understand Donald Trump.
That’s it. That’s what he wants to do with your federal government.
Now, you can be a conservative, you can be a MAGA person and hopefully look at that and say — y’know “I pay like 30-40% in taxes, it’s kind of lot, I don’t like it, but I definitely don’t like it if I’m paying for one guy to get back at people who pissed him off. Seems like kinda of a waste of my money.” But that’s what he wants to do in a second term.
I’ll give you an anecdote that I think was very revealing. I was in a meeting with the president, the ex-president Donald Trump in the Oval Office and this was March of 2019, and we were having a conversation about a foreign policy deal that we were trying to close with a foreign government. And at the time it did not make sense to me why Donald Trump made this segue in the conversation.
But we’re sitting there, the lights in the Oval Office were turned off and it was the afternoon so there as like sunlight coming in. He of course, is drinking sweaty Diet Coke on the table, and we’re chatting and he said something to the effect of “Y’now I learned when I was in business that when you want something you have to actually go and get it. You can’t just threaten to sue someone, okay? Because if you threaten to sue someone people will say ‘pffff’ and they’ll blow you off. You have to just sue them, whether you have a case or not, and they settle like babes.” He said some version of that.
At the time I remember thinking “This is very weird” but you think back to Donald Trump’s career and his disposition, whether he had a case or not, was to go sue his adversaries - because once you sue them they face the prospect of court costs and discovery and all these things, so they just want to settle.
Put more simply, you develop leverage over them that you didn’t have before. It ended up being very relevant to a conversation were having about a foreign partner at the time, but it’s also how Donald Trump viewed every action in government.
He was on a constant quest, for leverage. Where can I get leverage over someone else and use that leverage to get what I want? That’s not inherently a bad thing. Y’know in any negotiation let’s say with a foreign power, the United States might want leverage and use that leverage to advance it’s interests.
But this is different. This is a man looking for personal leverage to get the thing that he personally wants and not for the country. That’s the Donald Trump you will see in a second term. That’s the person behind the scenes, is a man who is constantly hunting ways to get leverage over his enemies. How will that manifest itself in government in a way that affects your everyday Americans?
Well, one of the examples that I go back to that I saw a lot in Homeland Security was emergency response. When Donald Trump would see a disaster strike around the country, it’s the president’s job to sign these disaster declarations and send federal aid.
But if a disaster happened in a blue state, Donald Trump saw an opportunity because he was like “Ah, this is a place with a governor that doesn’t like me, people who didn’t vote or me - maybe I don’t sign that disaster declaration. Maybe I don’t call up the governor and see if he’s willing to cut me a deal.” That was his mindset, and we saw that happen in several circumstances. We talked him off of it, but it’s the type of thing that will happen in the second term.
It seems to me that when a true MAGA believer realizes that they’ve been deliberately lied to about the “Biden Crime Family”, about “Russia Russia Russia”, about “2020 Election Fraud” about “Democrat Crime” and the dangers of the “Dreaded Vaccine” — that people deliberately concocted and promoted these lies to MILLIONS of Americans on purpose which had led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands — that they’ve been fed a never-ending line of BULLSHIT for years now, just like this woman I could only imagine that they will also become incredibly angry.
I know I’m already angry just thinking about it. If they ever do they could become an incredible force for good in this world.
We have to hope that many more MAGA defy their natural tendencies and finally figure out the truth. But I’m not holding my breath. We can hope for the best, but we have to be prepared for the worst.
