The Commonwealth has been a reliably red state, but we're a fairly blue county, us in Albemarle (home of the University of Virginia and Thomas Jefferson). Charlottesville is as blue as they come. Normally, at our annual county Democratic picnic, which is our largest fundraiser, we get about 300-400 people. Maybe. Thanks to George W. Bush, an election year, a congressional candidate (Al Weed) who's serious about unseating a reactionary GOP stalwart, and a canvass-enhanced database of Democratic voters to whom we could send out invitations directly, we got 1200 or so participants in our barbeque tonight. We were afraid we'd run out of food. We had to make an additional beer run. This doesn't happen.
This is a good sign, although I'd not bet the farm on it.
