This was my best laugh this month and I want to share it with those who might have missed it:
While cruising a website for street performers I came across a brilliant blog entry titled "Buggery and Bad Breath." It cited a January 17th (2005) Reuters' article, "Pentagon Spurned Plan to Initiate Enemy Homosexuality" by Jim Wolf (http://www.political-news.org/breaking/5274/pentagon-spurned-plan-to-initiate-enemy-homosexuality.ht
ml).
It's old news, in that the proposal -- which suggested the development of "an 'aprodisiac' to spur homosexuality among enemy troops" -- was first made to the Pentagon in 1994. But the good folks at the Sunshine Project (www.sunshine-project.org) reveal that the Pentagon revisited some elements of this interesting proposal as recently as 2001.
In addition to the biochemical weapons which would have the "distasteful but completely nonlethal" effect of stimulating homosexuality, one potential application could also create "severe and lasting halitosis," in enemy targets making them easily identifiable within a general population. Come to think of it, I believe I've crossed paths with at least one of these enemy combatants. . . .
You can read the original document, in all its fascinating glory, at the Sunshine Project website by clicking the "Non-Lethal" tab and then selecting the "Aphrodisiac Document" from the left-hand column (sorry, no direct link).
Go ahead: Make your day.
