From the
State of the Union Address
Justice is distorted, and our economy is held back, by irresponsible class actions and frivolous asbestos claims -- and I urge Congress to pass legal reforms this year.
Halliburton recently finalized a $4.17 billion settlement to over 400,000 asbestos-related lawsuits that they inherited when they purchased Dresser Industries in 1998 (during Dick Cheney's tenure as CEO of Halliburton).
President Bush dares to call the lawsuits "frivolous". Ironic that a President who claims to be "pro-life" - a man that ran for President as a "compassionate conservative" -- would view the tragedy of mesothelioma as "frivolous".
More after the break -->
Mesothelioma is a cancer that strikes the lining of the chest cavity. Many of the lawsuits that were filed against Halliburton were filed by the survivors of those who had already died from the cancer.
Yet, to the President, these are "frivolous" because, ultimately, they harm Halliburton's bottom line.
President Bush says he is a man of faith. Unfortunately, it would appear that his god is Mammon.
This is an Administration, that while it claims to be "pro-life", has absolutely no compassion for humanity whatsoever. What truly is the difference between calling the suffering of a family losing a loved one "frivolous" and the torture of innocent Iraqi civlians because they might have some information about insurgents.
We, as a community, need to push this out to the general media. This Administration does not care about anything, or anyone, except profit, and power.
