I have been inspired lately to revisit (reframe?) why I pay taxes.
George Lakoff, in his book "Don't think of an Elephant", talks about how our past tax dollars have been an investment in our current world. Tax dollars built the interstate highway system and the internet (singular).
As tax season approaches, I have been planning an email to friends and family sharing this alternate view. Hopefully I can begin to change how a few people view paying taxes.
What's something that you enjoy getting for your tax dollar?
I hate that nearly 50 cents out of every dollar goes to support a war machine, but there are federal programs that I love.
NASA inspires me! We're exploring Mars, for crying out loud!
Social Security helps me feel more secure. (And I'm committed to fighting for it!)
Pell Grants helped me pay for college.
The National Parks system has provides a regular escape from my busy world and reminds me that my connection to the Earth goes beyond the pigeons outside my window.
Can you help me brainstorm? What's your favorite government program or federally funded project?
