South Dakota governor Mike Rounds
signed four bills into law today to make women feel guilty - more guilty and ashamed and devastated than they already do - about getting abortions.
One of the four new laws requires doctors to inform pregnant women, in writing and in person,
no later than two hours before an abortion, that the procedure ends the lives of humans and terminates the constitutional relationship women have with their fetuses.
Women also must be told that some women die during abortions and the procedure can lead to later depression and other problems.
More after the jump.
No later than two hours before? Come on, that's just mean. Kicking her when she's down. And what's with the "constitutional relationship?" I can't figure out what that means.
Another bill signed by Rounds tightens the state's parental notification law to require parents to be told within 24 hours if their minor daughter receives an emergency abortion to protect her life or health. The minor could seek an exception through a court order.
Ok, let's think this through. If the abortion is taking place because of an emergency, do you think there's time to get a court order? Hhhmmmm.
The argument for all of these laws is to make sure women are well-informed about the choices they make. Yeah, right. The only argument I've seen against them is that the laws undermine medical privacy. Once again, the Left makes the weakest case possible. What about the belief in many world religions - not to mention scientific evidence and legal precedent - that a fetus is not, in fact, a human life? Where does South Dakota get off defining a fetus as a human life in the eyes of the law? What about the implication in these laws that women are too stupid to make their own decisions? What about the clear aim to pile on to the guilt and shame of a woman within hours of a heart-rending decision?
