what What WHAT?!?!?!?!
Brauer told Reuters she believes doctors will eventually begin ordering women to abort disabled children, or refuse to treat them after birth.
"They'll force women to kill their children ... It will be like China. It's the next logical step," she told Reuters.
"She" being Karen Brauer, president of Pharmacists for Life in response to the "Access to Legal Pharmaceuticals Act (ALPhA) that was filed in Congress today. The bill, which most of you have surely heard of by now, allows a pharmacist to refuse to fill a prescription
if another pharmacist on site can fill it instead.
Her rationale is that the simple act of referring a patient to another pharmacist, is complicity in the act of killing a baby. Okay, I'll give her only the very very very very very slimmest of margin on the issue of RU-486 (which is LEGAL and should NEVER be refused)only because it terminates an implanted pregnancy. Though I still VEHEMENTLY disagree with her even on that. But BIRTH CONTROL?!?! Jeezus Christ, give me a break!
64% of reproductive-aged women (15-44) use some form of contaceptive. 30% use the pill, and 27 opt for tubal ligation. Interestingly, only 18% use condoms. Of the 42 million fertile, sexually active women, 89% are practicing contraception.
- Mosher WD et al., Use of contraception and use of family planning services in the United States: 1982-2002, Advance Data from Vital and Health Statistics, No. 350. 2004.
So does she really believe that "every sperm is sacred" and 89% of us sexually active women are active baby killers by using some form of contraception, or just those of us on the pill?
Did this woman even go to pharmacy school? (I know that she did, and I'm sure her entire CV will appear on this site soon enough.)Does she know how the pill works?
From the evil (/snark) Planned Parenthood...
"Usually, these hormones prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulation). They also thicken the cervical mucus, which would prevent sperm from joining with an egg"
I don't know this as a fact, but I'm willing to wager that the number of fertilizations that occur that are not allowed to implant while a woman is on the pill is probably near or below the natural spontaneous abortion rate.
My answer - this woman just needs to get laid and stop worrying about how much illicit fun the rest of us are having thanks to the wonders of pharmaceuticals.
