We all know it. Members of the Reconstructionist wing of the TheoCon movement have already published work calling for a return to Old Testament law, including the death penalty for homosexuals. Old news.
They're also trying to kill us in more indirect ways. From the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:
A Minnesota legislator who said he was "shocked and disgusted" by explicit language on a gay-outreach website has won approval in a House committee to eliminate all Health Department funding for the state's largest AIDS-prevention program.
A measure sponsored by Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Delano, would end $425,000 in funding for the Minnesota AIDS Project (MAP). It would forbid state funding for "websites, pamphlets, or other communications that contain sexually explicit images or language." The bill next goes to the House floor."
This is nothing new. The wingnuts have been attempting things like this for years, and Jesse Helms (is that fucker dead yet) succeeded in putting such language (in queer-specific terms) in Federal law on more than one occassion. I have one question for these people:
How in the Hell can you do HIV prevention without talking about sex?
Of course, this is about sex. It's about the "talk about it and they'll do it" idiocy pushed by the right. But it's about more than that.
Early in the Bush administration, AIDS organizations that presented explicit safer sex information to men who have sex with men (MSM--and no, that's not mainstream media) were targeted for investigation.
The Bush administration has cut AIDS prevention and treatement funding. State's are having to pick up the burden (especially in providing drugs for low income people) and people are being kicked off the eligibility rolls. People are dying because they can't get meds.
But, it's us gay folks that take the brunt of the sex attacks. Can't give queer folks information on how to protect themselves. That would encourage them to be queer. Better that we die.
