This is a followup to AntiChimp's diary on how we're
losing white middle America to Republicans.
Something I find even more disturbing is that we're losing the Hispanic vote. The Washington Times drooled over the 2004 election numbers:
President Bush's rising popularity with Hispanic voters spells trouble for Democrats in future elections.
The president took 44 percent of the Hispanic vote on Election Day, up nine percentage points from 2000. Strategists say if that support continues to grow -- reaching 50 percent or higher -- it could equate to a Republican lock on the White House when coupled with the 62 percent support that the party enjoys among white male voters.
If Republicans ever get 50% of the Hispanic vote we're in
deep, deep shit.
We need to get the Hispanic community involved in our politics. Why not translate Daily Kos? A group of bilingual Kossacks could translate the blog entries into Spanish at the subdomain http://espanol.dailykos.com until it takes off on its own.
Now we can't possibly translate every single diary and comment, but we can translate every single front-page story and recommended diary. This would only amount to about 15-40 translations per day.
How would our translators be compensated for their work? Markos was able to get volunteer bloggers for almost every professional baseball team through his Sports Blog Nation venture. The bloggers share advertising revenue with Markos. I think he could work out something similar for Kossack translators.
Lets not wait for a conservative blog like RedState.org to do something similar before we do it ourselves.
UPDATE: As noted below in the comments, the 44% number is disputed by other exit polls:
A WCVI exit survey concluded that Latinos voting on Election Day supported democratic challenger John Kerry over President George W. Bush by a margin of 67.7% to 31.4%. In determining the results for the presidential race, the WCVI exit survey interviewed 1,179 respondents in 46 precincts across 11 states on Election Day.
