Let's do our own investigation using public records, read on...
After a three week "exhaustive" search of records in Texas, DC and Florida, Kit is reported Kerr County Attorney Rex Emerson has decided that Karl and Darby Rove did not break the law when they cast their 2004 votes in Kerr County, Texas.
This whole story began when the Washington Post reported that the Roves were receiving a homestead deduction on their $1.1 million house in Northwest DC since 2001 but were voting in Texas. In order to receive the credit in DC, one has to vote in DC. In order to vote in Texas, one has to live or "intend to return" to Texas.
The Roves clearly broke DC's law, and they are reported to have repaid the District for ill-gotten gains. But the "intent to return" was a little fuzzy, so the DA and the Sheriff decided to investigate and they found that Karl and Darby DO in fact, plan to return to the property (two small cottages) they have in Ingram, Texas.
But how about we do a little of our own investigatin' the Rove's plans to live in the middle of Texas Hill Country once the President wraps up his term.
Their considerable portfolio of properties:
Where the Roves voted: 1128 Highway 39, Ingram, TX. You can find it by searching http://www.txcountydata.com Select Kerr County. Enter the info. And you'll see their "home", worth $57k, registered under "River House LLC." Karl and Darby - if you live there, then why is it a company? The property is reported to be a lovely pair of cottages, totaling 814 square feet.
Where the Roves live, year round, in DC. Search
https://www.taxpayerservicecenter.com/RP_Search.jsp?search_type=Assessment
Enter 1435 in "square" and 0075 in "lot". And see that their 5 bedroom 4 bath home (4,500 square feet) is assessed at $1.1 million (of course the way things are in DC, it's probably worth a lot more). Oh, and it's registered in Karl's name - not a company like in Texas.
And a new house, just built in Florida - maybe a retirement or vacation home. Search http://www.waltonpa.com Enter their last name. See that a lovely 2500 square foot home (just built in 2004!) pops up in the community of Rosemary Beach, FL, with 4 bedrooms and three baths. It's so new, in fact, that the assessor has not even attached a value to it yet. But you can see the $1-2 million plus swanky neighbors at www.rosemarybeach.com . Oh, and it's registered under Karl and Darby's names - not a company like in Texas.
Remember folks, in order to qualify to vote in Texas, you have to "intend to return." So - do they really plan to return to an 814 square foot cottage in the middle of Hill Country so Karl can ply his trade? Wouldn't a DC powerbase and 4000 square foot house be more comfortable? Or a lovely 2500 square foot "carribean villa" in a retirement/vacation community on Florida's panhandle?
