I have an idea to stop the Alito nomination. It's risky and difficult to execute but it just might work.
For years, we've been warning people that the Republicans will be killing roe-v-wade first chance they get. We've screamed it from the mountaintop so much that, for most people, it's been reduced to background noise. And no, we here are not most people.
See my strategery on the other side.
Since overturning Roe would revert it back to the states, how about reminding people what's at stake by moving urgently at the state level.
Have Democratic governors in solidly blue states or Democratic state legislators in solidly blue seats introduce bills to (1) reaffirm safe legal abortions in states where it would already be legal or (2) to legalize abortion in states where it would be criminalized by laws already on the books. If they do it in a coordinated way, say all on the same day early next week (assuming a Democrat delays the committee vote), it would send a powerful message that we truly believe Alito's confirmation will kill roe-v-wade - especially if the media pick up on a coordinated campaign.
I suspect that might just translate into phone calls to senators. By the time the nomination makes it to the floor, several votes might be open to a filibuster.
Any ideas? Thoughts? Am I off my rocker?
A quick side note: Now I know some Democrats are pro-birth and they should be welcome to stay out of it if they wish. But Alito is so bad on so many levels (i.e. privacy, corporate power, unitary executive etc.) anything legal that could derail this nomination is fine by me. Also, this strategy might work for other issues as well (privacy, etc.)
**UPDATE** The vote has been delayed. It is now scheduled for Jan 24th.
