It strikes me that
Jane of Firedoglake has the right idea: let's get rid of as many of the gang of 14 as possible. After all, they got together and agreed that the virtual certainly that Strip Search Sammy would go after choice was not "extrordinary" enough for a filibuster, a fact that I find extraordinarily wrongheaded and which would be a fine thing to bring home to these so-called servants of the people (or at least a subset of them).
Here are the culprits:
John McCain, R-Arizona (not up until 2010)
Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina (2008)
John Warner, Virginia (2008)
Olympia Snowe, R-Maine: Up for re-election, heavily favored
Susan Collins, R-Maine (2008)
Michael DeWine, R-Ohio: Likely Dem pickup (Sherrod Brown)
Lincoln Chafee, R-Rhode Island: Likely Dem Pickup (two candidates)
Joseph Lieberman, DINO-Connecticut: Challenged by Ned Lamont
Robert Byrd, D-West Virginia: up for re-election, I wouldn't cry to see him go and be replaced by a Dem. I have a lot of respedct for him, but he seems a little creaky around the edges, and this gang of 14 thing
Ben Nelson, D-Nebraska: Up for re-election, likely to hold. This is one that I tend to console myself by thinking that he is at least a vote for fightin' Harry Reid for Majority Leader.
Mary Landrieu, D-Louisiana (2008)
Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii (2010)
Mark Pryor, D-Arkansas (2008)
Ken Salazar, D-Colorado (2010)
So it looks like we have a good shot at taking out the weak members of this pack, and good riddance. I think Jane has the right idea-- any donations that you would have made to NARAL or Planned Parenthood would probably be better spent on Ned Lamont in CT, Brown or Whitehouse in RI, or Sherrod Brown in OH.
If the so-called interest groups aren't going to defend their "interests," women and pro-women male Dems may just have to do it themselves.
