Tuesday, March 14th is the big day!
Mark your calendars kids.
Friends and readers, please spread the word! Link this post and tell your friends! Pennsylvania needs your help!
Next Tuesday you should plan a day in the Pennsylvania state capital. Bring a friend or two, or twelve! Next Tuesday is our day to claim the rights that we were born to have as LGBT American citizens.
I am speaking of the 1000+ rights that are conferred upon an American couple when they enter into the
civil contract of marriage.
Pennsylvania is no longer a safe middle ground on this issue! The fundies have targeted our fair populace for a fight over civil rights. Some
repugnant little organization in PA filled with religious-right-wing morons is trying to scare the people of PA into believing that marriage is in danger! And the only way to protect this frail and fragile entity is to guard it from the homosexuals! This ploy is getting old! It's not clever. Surely the approach is anything but original or creative. More to the point, it's just tragically flawed.
Gays aren't a threat to marriage, straight people are!
Marriage in America is in danger, but it's not from the Fags! Marriage is threatened by the breeders! Those straight men and women who enter into this contract with a cavalier attitude and dreams of a big party. Straight America is the portion of the populace that threatens the so-called "institution of marriage." With divorce as common as a friendly kiss on the cheek. It is the straight people that don't respect this civil contract! I think that if any organization is serious about protecting marriage they must stop focusing on the minority gay population that merely wishes to claim the same rights as every other committed American couple, and start focusing their energy on divorce! If they are really, and truly committed to saving marriage they need to dig in and find out why Americans aren't willing to do the work required to maintain and build a long lasting committed relationship? They need to work hard to help people learn to respect one another and the relationship they have built.
If they want to protect marriage and use child rearing as the reason, then they need to look at what divorce does to kids? Not what gay parents may or may not do to a child? That is a hypothetical for the majority, but hetero-divorce is a reality that all have experience with and we know what that can do to children. Protect marriage? Sure, but do it by making people enter the contract thoughtfully, and then by making them do the work it takes to keep a marriage healthy and alive.
Perhaps they should lobby the state of Pennsylvania to outlaw all divorces. That would protect the institution of marriage. That would strengthen our families. That would help kids.
Actually, that might make things worse, but the idea of it is no more ridiculous than the arguments they use against allowing me and my loving partner of 14 years to marry.
So...Next Tuesday, get on the road and
head to Harrisburg to attend the rally to support Marriage Equality. If you can't make it there in person, PLEASE take the time on Tuesday to write AND/or call your state representative! There is power in numbers and no one understands that better than a frightened politician. Make sure yours knows that supporting the inclusion of hate in the Constitution of the state of Pennsylvania will result in his/her replacement in November. Demand their support in a polite and
rational manner!
