As an FYI -- I just received an email action alert (also on the
National PTA website) from the National PTA informing its members that the House of Representatives will vote tomorrow morning (Friday April 7) on the federal budget for 2007. It asks them to call their representatives toll free at 1-800-459-1887 to urge them to vote "no," because it "severely underfunds discretionary spending for essential education and health services for children and poor and working-class families in communities nationwide."
The PTA message for Congress is as follows:
* Adequate funding for education and child welfare programs is essential to the economic prosperity of our country.
* If we are serious about keeping America competitive, we must be equally serious about our support of education and child welfare programs. Investing in America's children is an investment in both the current and future economic well-being of our nation.
* Urge him or her to vote for adoption of any amendments offered on the floor of the House that will increase education funding.
* Vote NO on the budget resolution unless significant increases in education funding are made. Congress must adopt a budget resolution that will strengthen our nation's commitment to our children and families.
I just called my own representative, Brian Higgins (D-NY 27) and was told by an aide that, as I expected, Higgins will vote "no."
The PTA has been a strong advocate for children and youth since 1897, with the following mission: "To support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community, and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children."
As the PTA says, "If passed, this budget would have a detrimental impact on millions of Americans for years to come."
