Been there, Done that!!!
I have lived through World War II, the Korean war, Vietnam, and was in Miami during the Cuban crisis.
I was never ashamed of America (not even over Vietnam) and I was never frightened.
We had an outhouse, put wood in the stove before cooking dinner, had kerosene lamps, and used a wash board on wash day. Water came from a hand pump on the well and you climbed into a metal wash tub in the kitchen to take a bath. We crossed the desert of the Southwest with a canvas water bag strapped to the front of the car. We had 15 cents per gallon gasoline and 25 cents per hour wages.
I was never ashamed. Our attitude was, "This is America we can make things better. We can do anything."
I lived through crinoline slips, teased hair, penny loafers, the Charleston, and hula hoops. We had Party line telephones and your phone number began with a word; ours was Midway 8-1416.
I cried when President Roosevelt died and again when President Kennedy was shot.
But I wasn't ashamed, nor frightened.
I remember when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and Sept 11, 2001.
I was angry, but not frightened. And certainly not ashamed.
I was always proud of being born an American, proud of the way the men went to Europe in World War II, and the women took over at home. A lot of the men had never held a gun before but they learned fast. Women who had never worked outside the home learned to build planes. The whole country, men, women, and children came together and did the job that had to be done.
I am proud no longer. A pseudo cowboy has made me ashamed to be an American. And ashamed that we, as Americans, have stood and are standing by, letting it happen. Shame on us.
A librarian and a pseudo cowboy thought they knew what was best for our schools, for your children, and my grandchildren just because they held the purse strings. The children will pay the price for this disaster for the rest of their lives. Shame on us.
A pseudo cowboy took us into an unnecessary war while doing nothing to stop the invasion of our homeland.
A pseudo cowboy who failed in every business he was involved in convinced his cronies in Congress to let him handle this country's budget. He has failed again. We are in bankruptcy.
I am ashamed. We let it happen and are letting it get worse by the day, by the hour.
On Sept. 12, the American flag sprouted on homes, front lawns, cars, and shirts like weeds in an abandoned garden. The people of America were angry that our homeland had been attacked and that our people had been killed for no reason other than that they were Americans. Slowly, most of those flags have disappeared. Most of the ones that remain are being flown in support of our troops, not from pride in America.
Too many good men and women have died and been maimed for our flag to do anything but show it our respect. Therefore, I am suggesting that we let it fly once again. Put it everywhere. But at the same time let us put a black wreath on our doors, a black ribbon on our lapel and cars. Let us show the sadness that we feel for the loss of our American soul.
THEN LET'S TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK!
