Some of you probably know that the Amish typically "self insure" as a community, and most don't carry medical or other insurance. The medical expenses of the survivors of the tragic schoolhouse shooting will, of course, be extraordinary. An Amish gentleman quoted in a WaPo article today (linked here) suggested that folks seeking to express their sympathy through flowers or other objects should instead consider donating to a fund that will help defray medical and other expenses of the affected families.
Lancaster Online.com has an article
here explaining how and where to make donations, both by mailing checks to a local bank and using credit cards online through the Mennonite Disaster Services website.
I know there's a fair amount of money in the Amish community, and that the decision to self-insure is one some people might disagree with, but thought folks interested in contributing anyway would appreciate this information.
Thanks.
