The Raleigh News & Observer is reporting that the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, Ferrell Blount, has resigned.
This could be something, it could be nothing. Blount claims it is not related to tonight's election results, but rather a 2008 bid for office....
I ain't buying it!
"Since the 2008 election cycle begins the day following the 2006 elections, I do not want to be viewed as using the position of chairman for political gain," Blount said in his letter.
Anybody really buying this?
This doesn't sound like a confident man:
No matter what happens during Tuesday's election, Blount said he thought he was leaving the state Republican Party in better shape than he left it.
Emphasis Added
This could bode well for Heath Shuler and Larry Kissel, but I'm cautious about reading too much into it. I don't buy that it's a harbinger of total GOP implosion, but I'm also not buying that this is because he doesn't want to use his office for political gain...
I'm thinking he's got bad news from NC-08 and NC-11, and it's more likely he doesn't want his office to cause him any political loss when he starts his campaign for Governor (or some other office) in 2008.
